Whenever in heavy traffic, or behind a truck, or "oil burner" I get a very bad exhaust smell in the passenger compartment, my mechanic thought there was a control for recirculating air, but I can't find one. How do I stop this, my wife won't ride in the car anymore? Any solution, "not get a new wife"?

max air shuts the outside vents on most cars, or use the off button.

It's winter so I need heat, and neither is an option.

Chances are your EATC needs to be overhauled as its letting vacuum which holds (or releases) the fresh air door (allowing it to bypass the door servo) making fresh air to come in all of the time. Take some air freshener and spray it in the cowl vent (near the lower part of the windshield) while the system is on in heat or a/c only (have someone in the car) if they smell it right away the door is open and thats the source of your trouble.

Chances are the door is stuck open, or the aforementioned problem is the cuprit or leaves and debris maybe holding it open.

Its usually open when there is a call for defrost, as fresh air is needed to displace the moist air in the car otherwise the windows will stay fogged. The evaporator draws the moisture away from the windshield and resupplies dry air to it as well by acting as a magnet for the moisture (note the dripping water on humid days from under the car, this moisture escapes from a capture built into the case under the evap and has a hose to drip the moisture out. The fresh air vent must be open or the evap will saturate and then supply colder and wetter air back to the windshield again causing even more fog. Your problem is its open all of the time allowing stinky exhaust fumes to be grabbed by the cowl intake and sent thru your vents.

Hopefully its an easy fix. Regards.. Richy

Ah.. I see, I drive with the defrost, floor setting all the time, so I need to defrost, and then switch to the vent, or the floor setting? Right?

Change your diet!

Take a shower.
Enjoy the drive by yourself!!

Once you clear the fog, try moving it to heat or a/c and see if you can still smell the air freshener when you spray it in the cowl. There will always be some fresh air allowance but it shouldnt be as pronounced of a smell in those positions.

If you do smell it just as strong in any position, then the EATC may be messed up (see thread on how to repair) or check the fresh air door for debris as it may not be closing. It probably can be seen by removing the plastic cover over the cowl. Remove leaves, twigs and debris which has collected there especially if you have lots of trees near you.

Let me know how you make out.. Richy
