Most of you may not know since it's Korean, but my g/f has an '04 Sorento, and when it gets back from the body shop I need to do an oil change on it. Question is, what should be the proper weight of oil to use since it's not a Mod motor? Filter brand? Any input would be appreciated.

That's easy.....Mobil-I and NAPA GOLD filters. There may be many products as good, but none are better. :)

PS: DO NOT USE FRAM OIL FILTERS

5-20 syn blend and equivalent filter

Check in your owners manual for the correct weight oil. As far as brand a syn Blend would be a better oil than stock oil & a good filter.

See, the problem with the Kia manual, it has a stupid part number, doesn't have what type of weight to use. I do know it takes 4.5qts of oil though. Brian 5w20 will run fine in that motor?

I would use the Kia/Hyundia factory filter and Mobil 1 5W20.

Use 75W140 and a bottle of Soft Scrub.

:stupid:

I do 5W20 Redline and a WIX filter on the 3.7L 6 cyl Durango every 5K. Tolerances are tighter and oil jackets smaller these days. Thinner oils seems to be the answer these days. The 20W50 days are definitely behind us!

The Kia branded filter might be a good idea if still in warranty. Would keep them from blaming an after-market filter for a failure.

What the oil Part number?

From Amsoil lookup:

SAE 10W-40 Synthetic High Performance Motor Oil (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=1 2)
SAE 10W-40 XL Synthetic Motor Oil (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=6 )
Above 5°F......15W-40, 15W-50
Above -13°F......10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50
Above 16°F......20W-40, 20W-50
Below 32°F......5W-30
Below 0°F......5W-20

FWIW...

I have used FRAM filters since 1987 and never once had an issue with them I realize everyone seems to think that they are made by Satan himself.

I use Motorcraft on the MM,but I changed my Explorer on Saturday and put on a FRAM. WHy does everyone hate them so bad. I have had many vehicles since 87 with over 125K used the fram every 3K on them never had a problem.

I'd sell it.

Owners manual will give a recommendation for oil weight, I'd go by that.

I doubt a FRAM will kill your motor but there is plenty of evidence out there to display that they are inferior in how they are built and equipped. In addition they cost the same or more as filters that have better construction and ability. I always used FRAM on past cars as well, never had an engine problem, but after learning more about filters and how different ones are built and perform, plus comparing price, I get a better deal and better performance from other brands.

Motorcrafts are nice I also like Purolator PureOne, WIX and regular Purolators aren't bad choices for a daily driver.

I'm telling you, I've been through every damn page and it doesn't say what kind of weight to use. Rich, do you think I'll be safe running 5w30 instead of w40 in it? It's still in warranty, however, we bought it from a Ford dealer (dirt cheap) and obviously they don't have Kia filtes. Hell, my MM is from a GM dealer, and what do you think I found on it? Yep, an AC Delco filter...Don't ask me how they got it in.

Looks like they want at least 30 hot. Should be fine, esp with a good quality synthetic. Put Redline 5W30 in it with a decent oil filter and air filter and let it go for 8-10K.

According to Mobil's website, they appear to recommend 15w50(!!) for the Kia Sorento.

I don't know if this is right or not...but here's their oil recommendation wizard:

http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Car_Care/Vehicle_Chooser/VehicleChooser.aspx?option=2

AC Delco makes filters for other makes too, there is even a Part # listed for the Marauder on the RockAuto website: ACDELCO Part # PF1250 (For '03 Merc Marauder)

Here's the '04 Sorento filters:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,carcode,1426003,parttype,534 0

You may be able to validate the oil type here:

Yeah I'd check the kia forums and see what they use or call a Kia dealer and see if they'll spill the beans.

She's afraid to drive mine, but loves it at the same time, she wouldn't trust herself to drive one all the time though.

I agree! 15w40 is the standard for diesel fleet engines. That Kia isn't a diesel is it??

Check under the hood on the oil cap, most call for 5W20.

Look in a part store for the correct oil/filter. My wife has a Kia but gets her oil changed at a lube shop.

It's not that FRAM filters are made by Satan himself (well...actually they ARE :D ), it's that they're an inferior filter at a premium price.

No it's not Ian, as far as I know, there are no Kia Diesel's at all, and if there is, they're not available here.
