My moms has a 98...99 Ford Contour with 82k on the clock. Her check engine light STAYS on and she took it to her trusted mechanic. He said she needs a MAF, she tells me, I said I put one on about 3-5 years ago...She said well the mechanic cleaned the old one and the car is acting right thus far...BUT at first it was doing what a fellow members MM is doing idle, then cut off, but when you drive it, its "fine." My initial question is...Do MAF go bad that often? My second question is...that car gives off an odor (foul), is the MAF related to that?

Does it stall at low speed?

The cats could be clogged and need to be replaced. Normally when you get a foul odor that is the culprit. My .02

A vacuum line is likely dried and cracked and sucking unmetered air.

Helped an old guy in at the Bennett auto parts one afternoon with his contour. He'd spent hundreds at the mechanic. I saw the line, fixed it in 10 min for 6 bucks worth of parts!

If that is the case, look at the charcol canister that is used to collect fuel vapors...There are vacum lines that connect it...That's where , I would bet, your problem is...If all lines are good...Change the canister, probably has a crack in it...

Good luck...
