We just had one this afternoon. I went out in it to get the mail.

Thunder, didn't see any lightning flashes and snow. 5 minutes after I got back in it really started to snow and blow.

It is quite rare and a bit bizzare but pretty cool too.

Convective weather is fantastic, espcially in the winter. You are right, it's very rare. We tend to see "thunder snow" more often living downwind of the lower great lakes. I from Cleveland, and my wife from Buffalo, we have both experienced thunder snow on more than one occasion. We've also seen lightning associated with it as well. Can't see bolts or anything, just bright flashes amid the heavy falling snow. Thunder snow is more commonly associated with lake effect snow events, rather than synoptic snow like what you've seen in canada, but it does happen. When it does...it's pretty cool.
