Word pad is rich text, use notepad it'll take it all the way down to plain text which the forum editor will not try to do anything wierd on.

Copy into notepad then ctrl-a to select all in notepad, and past (ctrl-v) back into the forum editor window, you may need to then go in and add a few line breaks via the enter key to space paragraphs and also bold the headings as plaintext removes all formatting just leaves only the text.

edit: Actually a shortcut to all this would be to copy the text, go to the forum post editor, and click the button on the top right with the "A" in it, this will change the editor window from the feature rich to text only version, it iwll not try to translate any of the formatting just will enter the basic text.

Here I thought I would get flamed for the discussion, and never expected such a problem to occur. This caused me to check my system at work. Sure enough, anti-virus was turned off and not up to date.
