What's a 327 worth?

First off I have no idea if this is a good engine or not (seems just fine). My buddy/bass player just bought a 57 Chevy with a 327 under the hood and he has a new engine to drop into it. I called dibs on his 327 because it runs fine, but needs a carb and fuel pump. The only problem is we have no idea on it's value. I know it's out of a 65 Impala SS or at least they say SS and it was rebuilt 15 years ago with only 300 miles on it total. Now the car is at an engine shop and I told them to check out this engine before I decide to take it so if it's junk I am staying away, but if it's a keeper with a new carb, gaskets, fluids, exc it's going in my 65 Chevy C-10 and I think it would be a perfect match.

So any thoughts or know if this is worth it? or know what it's worth? :confused:

Depending on condition, between $500 to $2000.

I said it seems fine, but it's in an engine shop and they'll see if it's decent or not. By my eyes and ears it seems fine and I heard it run 2 days ago, but I want someone with the trained ear and eyes to check it out.

LOL on the price. I have a 1967 small main 327 w/ balanced forged internals, that I topped with electronic multiport EFI w/ a Holley Stealth ram intake, in my 2nd gen. A 327 has a lot of "nostalgia" factor, but a 350 will always go faster, build the same way, so in the modern world of motoring, a 327 is not an advantage in any way. They rev high because they have to, to make up the cubic inch disadvantage.

A 327 as a core non running motor is worth a few hundred dollars, unless you are trying to sell it to some #s matching corvette guy. If its a 67 or earlier engine, they had tiny mains and TINY rods. The rod bolt nuts use a 1/2" socket!!! They are really really small. Small mains supposedly equal slightly faster revving due to less drag (although I doubt you could tell seat of the pants), but they also equal less strength.

I've been spinning my 327 w/ stock midgy rods w/ heavy forged slugs to 6500 for years and the motor is still together, but that is probably not the best idea. If I blow it up though, I'll swap the aftermarket heads and EFI setup onto a 350 or a 400 sb and carry on.

Thanks Vics, that's what I needed to hear. I'm not looking for performance with this engine and actually I was hoping more for a straight six, but having this chance for an old school engine for and old school truck seemed right. This is just a cruizer and I don't even plan on it leaving the midwest again, but maybe to the Dream Cruise if I think it can make it this summer. ;)

Any SBC with enough displacement (IE more than 305 chevy) will run hard, built right. But don't pay a lot for it, it's just an outdated pre-350 era small block.

you dont see many 327ci around my part of the country anymore, but they are a good strong engine and probally worth a good buck also
