View Full Version : A Different Underdrive Pulley Question

I have read with interest the various threads about whether UD pulleys will cause undercharging from the alternator, and have seen the various well reasoned opinions and experiences there. This is different, however, but the principle behind it is the same. As the temperature stays in the 90's or higher for half the year in Houston, AC is of great concern to me. I find the Ford AC to be barely capable of handling the heat, so I don't want to do anything to minimize its power. Will UD pulleys cause less output from the compressor, and therefore less cooling capacity? I know, those of you in Canada might not understand this question, but then, we don't understand heated seats down here!

I have a seperate program for UDP and I raise your RPM by 200 and works out just fine

I notice no difference in the MM's ability to cool the car with the UD pullies. The only thing I notice is with the high speed fan on, it'll slow down a tad while at idle, but come back up to speed once accelerating, but that goes with the head lights also. Which if you think about it, most all cars do the same, so it's no real issue. Check my sig for a list of my other mods so you can kind of compare and see where I'm coming from.

Of course we do. It's been in the 90's (32+ C) here for about 4-5 weeks steady. Right now it's 33C, (91 - 92F) according to my gauge. Big thunderstorm, and tornadoes recently too.

The only difference is that in Texas, you wouldn't understand the -40's. If you only knew....you'd underconstumble heated seats :-)

Incidentally, Fords are known here for their great heaters. In the winter, it's important to be able to set your heater to 'cremate'. -50C outside + 'cremate' inside = just right.

From what others have said, U/D's don't affect A/C noticabally, even at idle. Members from the deep south IIRC.

underconstumble ???

The pullies are probably in the top 3 of mods from Dennis (that I have so far)...just behind the chip & gears...and I'm talking from Hotlanta.

I'm sure you read all my post on this,I can say the AC works fine with ud's.

Nothing more from me on this.

Who? Me?

My good Doctor...you KNOW I only post serious answers to serious questions here....

(Actually...now I can't get the They Might Be Giants - song out of my head)

Anybody remember it?

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Yeah...right before I became a game show host...

This is a timely thread for me....as I am going to do the exhaust and pulleys with Dennis this week. Good information....just as a side bar....here in Central Florida it is very hot and the AC does not run so cold when just in idle for any car.....I typically just rev the engine a bit to get the RPMs up and cool it down a bit....no biggie.....

I am in New Orleans land of 100% humidity. Have had UD's w/out any change in idle since Feb, no prob. w/ A/C or battery.

I'll give you THAT^^^

The only place more humid than Houston in August...is "The Big Easy"!!!

One thing you really need to consider is how dark your window tint is. Here in Dallas a black untinted car, except for factory tint, will be 180 degrees inside setting in the midday sun during August. A dark tint will make it from 30 to 40 degrees cooler. This is a tremendous help to an AC running on a sunny Texas day.

for all of the good info, guys, as usual. As far as understanding sub zero weather, I was an Army Infantry officer on the DMZ in Korea in 1975-76. I left Houston and went to where it got down to -20F in the winter. It's the only real winter I have ever seen, and God willing, the only one I ever will see!

After installing Reinhart's headers over the week-end, I noticed an increase in RPM's at idle and voltage now reads 12.5+. Before installation and with the underdrives pulley's it was 12V. Must be contributed to having less restriction since it pulls even harder from launch, etc... I'm Happy!

I am looking for the correct Steeda part number to order the UD pulleys. I assume these are the good steel pulleys. I thank the folks that I have PMed on this question, but I have not gotten a correct number that I can order by. Also, what year Mustang are these pulleys used on? Are any of the FORD UD pulleys useable on the MM? If so do you know the part numbers?

One more question. The new MM TSB replacement stock spark plugs are the AGSF-32P-MF4 (which are carried for the Mustang). They are deeper threaded plugs. One range colder is MF6. FORD does not make a two range colder plug. Would the MF6 plug be a suitable replacement for the expensive Denso IP-20 plugs.

Thanks for your help.

Glenn

If I may, TAFs advice includes both the underdrive pulleys AND the plugs...
