View Full Version : Time to start getting serious on "The Invasion"
"The Invasion" - When 25+ Marauders come screamin into Ennis, TX.
Here are my thoughts for the folks in the Southeast...(marauderman and I will hopefully firm up in the next day or 2).
I meet marauderman (and anyone else who wants to from GA, AL, TN, FL, SC etc.) early on the 17th in Birmingham, AL. That day we get to Shreveport, LA (approx. 450 miles). We will spend the night of the 17th in Shreveport.
The next morning we wait for the midwest/northeast contingent to arrive in the Shreveport area from their overnight in Memphis (approx. 345 miles from Memphis to Shreveport).
Then we ALL ride in to Ennis (approx 200 miles) of American -made muscle...in formation.
Thoughts? Concerns? Comments?

I will be leaving on the 16th so when that date gets closer we can talk about meeting at some point
Sounds great Dennis...we'll give you one helluva escort!

Todd: Maybe we Marauders from the Memphis area can drop south to route 20 via route 59 @ Texarkana, and hook-up there?
looks to be about 18 miles into Texas from the La. border the intersection of 59 & 20.
Mac how about it?

May be a more direct route using Rt. 71 south out of Texarkana, Ark., direct into Shreveport picking up I-220 West to I-20 West and meet us just outside town there somewhere to be identified later....

And with that in mind...I kinda was looking for this thread to start being a "head/car-count" for those coming from the east, southeast and midwest.
So...we got me, marauderman, Dennis with the RV and SCMarauder in tow & BigDog....

I'll be driving down from New Hampshire. I've been mentioning the meet to my wife for several weeks. Then a couple of days ago I mentioned I might drive to Texas. She said "Are you crazy? 4,000 miles for a 3 day event?"
I just said "It's NOT 4,000 miles!! (only about 3,800 :baaa: :baaa:)
Big Dog....I'll check with you later when the routes & times get firmed up a little better.

Depending where they have us set up in the pits, you can go up to the top of the grand stands and get a real good picture of everything. I've done this several times out there. Hopefully, we'll be in a favorable position to make it happen!

This will(or may) take great effort but if we can all get out on the track at say 6-7am and line up we may be able to get a great shoot with the tower in the back ground.
Maybe we could get it set up with Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords they cover this event pretty well...
That woudl be a great shot.

I don't know what the carrier's policy is in this regard, but I assume that whatever I can fit inside the car gets to go for free. Makes sense, right?
I can run out and get some of those cheapy coolers or I have one or two Coleman coolers that are likely to keep cold longer. Should I plan on bringing them, soda, and water?

08-19-2003, 11:04 AM
Was planning on bring a few small ones myself--was kidding earlier but seriously, any additional stuff like that would be helpful ( just don't try to cover for everbody--) and could always be needed somewhere with the number of members planning on showing--i.e. any cheap ones as you say --leave it to you own descretion..
Maybe someone from the Texas area can enlighten us on the ease or dificulty factor obtaining drinks /ice for coolers for this event to have nearby our cars...a shead of light would be enlightening --eh! --Tom

First off...ICE
The Mustang crowd seems to purge all the Quick-e marts of the stuff, they use it to cool thier intakes.
I know there is a super market in Ennis.
Quick mart about 2 miles from the track.
I'm not sure whats in Waxahatchie.
Maybe we can purchase Ice from the consesioners supplier?

There is a Wal-Mart in Ennis. If some one could call the manager and tell him/her of our needs. If any one can stock ice Wal-Mart can?
Plus low low price, which means more

Or maybe I could bring some Co2 fire extinguishers with me--instant minus 110 degrees of coldness --only problem-- they weigh so much--26 lbs. for each 10# bottle..maybe put some in martyo's car ..hummmmm.... well forget....my thoughts are starting to get out of control.....excitment you know!

So, what's the road map plan here? I-40 to I-30, then SR 71 to Shreveport? Or, on to SR 59 to Marshall TX? Here's what TAF sent me in an e-mail...
"I meet marauderman (and anyone else who wants to from GA, AL, TN, FL, SC etc.) early on the 17th in Birmingham, AL. That day we get to Shreveport, LA (approx. 450 miles). We will spend the night of the 17th in Shreveport.

345 miles for you guys from Memphis to Shreveport...I figure 5 1/2 hours if you only average 65 MPH? So...if you were to get "up and at'em" no later than 8:00 am...a little after lunch should be about right. We don't want to get into Marauderville MUCH before 2:30 I'd think to be sure all the rooms are available. "
Sounds like a plan to me, any additional thoughts?

Radio Plan:
Okay - we use FRS radios like we planned (currently on sale at Radio Shack for fifteen bucks).
We can't use Channel ONE, because the FRS geeks are trying to set that up as an emergency channel nationwide - we better stay off'n it.
We can't use tones (i.e. "private line" settings) since they are not consistent between different radio brands.
So - here's the plan (since no one else spoke up):
Driving Down, Driving Around, and General Information: Channel FIVE (this is the one to monitor all the time. If someone is looking for you, call for you here. If there is general information to be distributed, do it here. If you want to talk to people in your little convoy as they drive down, do it here). NO PRIVATE LINE SETTINGS!
Chat (i.e. if you want to talk to someone else, and need to get off Channel FIVE): Channel SIX. NO PL SETTINGS!
Why set up a chat frequency? Because if someone is off chatting and they need to be 'found', at least we know where to look.
Any objections?
(FYI: Ear pieces for the radios are also on sale at Rat Shack for three bucks.)

Mark: In case I walk into Rat Shack, do you have a model number for the FRS and the earpiece?
Mark [N4OGL]

Sure:
Motorola® Talkabout® T5400 FRS Two-Way Radio
$14.99 reg.$19.99 Cat # 21-1876
3-Foot Pocket Radio Earphone with Plug Adapter
$2.99 Brand: RadioShack Cat # 33-179
[Edited afterthought: I don't have personal experience with this earphone and I don't know whether it's an exact fit. If not, the guys at Rat Shack should be able to fix you up with something in that price range.]
Although it has the "38 interference eliminator codes", we can't use 'em, because Motorola doesn't match Uniden which doesn't match Cobra which doesn't match Midland which...
Well, you get the idea. It might be noisy but it'll work.

Sounds like the plans are being completed and the dreams of many will be shortly fulfilled. Unfortunately, I was released from my job after 28 years, but found another one within 3 weeks. The problem? Went from 5 weeks vacation to none until January 2004. So, I'm begging you guys and gals not to be too "juvenile" at the meet so that the MM's will be invited back next year. Make this an annual event and I'll be there in 2004.

How did I miss out on COOKIES?

I left them in the cooler in 30 year old Tupperware.
When you think back, MV1 was the end of the beginning, in so many ways.
Notice I didnt say beginning of the end!

True, but it wouldn't have been called '1'
There were a few who felt there never would nor should be another.
Good thing there has been!

RC: I remember the mood after MV-1 happy, people putting a face with a name.
Then over the winter is when things began to change.
So here we are today still moving forward.

Are you all S. Easterners in agreement to waiting for us Northerners to catch up to you folks at that restaurant in Shreveport along I-20 on the afternoon of the 18th?

Yep...that's the plan, CRUZTAKER. Please join us there on the 18th for "The Invasion"....
Classic dialogue indeed. Who'd a figured?
That group of folks all in one place getting along WAS indeed 'historical'.
I went to the final money round late late late in the evening during the MM banquet and lost to a Focus.
What comes around goes around apparently.:P

Isn't that what happens when you bracket race, the slower car has the advantage and alot of times wins.
Hell, I raced a 19 second 6 cylinder Chevelle years ago with my 340 Dart and lost because I red lighted by .002 (waiting 6 1/2 seconds felt like forever)talk about embarassing.:bigcry:
