View Full Version : What can't we hear.

I was wondering if there was a loud noise but outside of human hearing in my livingroom, would it effect me.
Then I was wondering how many such sounds are in our houses, etc...
Anyone else wonder about this?

The voices in my head tell me not to worry about it, it is just the neighbors.

It is not the "loudness"; but the frequency that makes the difference in what you can hear .....
"Experiments have shown that a healthy young person hears all sound frequencies from approximately 20 to 20,000 hertz."
Babies & young children can hear things that an adult can't because they hear across a wider range. Animals (particularly dogs) can also hear things outside the normal range for people.
As you age, that range decreases naturally so that one would experience high frequency or low frequency hearing loss (or both). Constant exposure to high frequency, high decibel level tones (e.g. artillery fire or machinery whine) can also lead to hearing loss across part of the normal range. This is why hearing protection is required in such environments. This is also why those folks that run around with their sound system blasting abnormal bass levels will eventually be among the hearing impaired.
As to whether YOU have been affected by those sounds outside the normal range, I think we all know the answer to that. ;)

You need to change your name to Bill Nye.

I would suspect low frequencies below hearing threshhold with enough amplitude (i.e. volume) could cause some disturbances but at the level to cause a problem you'd probably "feel" them.

If a tree falls in the middle of the woods without anyone around, does it make a sound?

Yes. It sounds the same as one hand clapping.

I was sitting in my quiet house in the dark thinking, I wonder if it is really quiet in here.
It might not be quiet at all.

I wonder what all the radio frequencies we broadcast in our homes will mutate us into someday? I have two draft-N wireless access points, Bluetooth access points, the xbox360 uses Bluetooth for its wireless controllers also I think. Also have wireless controllers for the other game boxes... Wireless RF remotes for all the ceiling fans in the house, even out adjustable beds use wireless RF remotes. Geesh, talk about your excessive radiation...:D Oh yeah, let's not forget my cordless phone system. Ohh....also garage door opener and X-10 transmitter.... yikes I got a lot of stuff!
I can hear my brain cells dying as I type......

This reminded me that back when I was just out of high school, I worked at a local supermarket. Whenever I was assigned to a register at one end of the row of registers, I always got a headache. It took me a while to realize I got the headaches only after working on that end. One night, I worked the overnight shift, and while cleaning up near the end, I noticed a very high pitched constant sound. The last register, which was not used often, had something wrong with it, and it was giving off this high pitched beep sound. When I first informed the front end manager about it, she couldn't hear the sound. It was several months before they finally discovered the problem with that register. But after I discovered the high pitched sound, I refused to work near the register.
So, yes, we can be affected by sounds that we don't hear.

Some people have a really bad time with the noise emitted by flourescent light fixtures.

Not to scare you or anything, but think how many people live near you, and are using all these wireless devices too. Then think about the radio stations, tv broadcast, powerlines, transformers (not robot kind) and cell phone towers for each company in your immediate area. where you live you might have 50-150 sources, at work 1500.
This is why it is a good idea to have a faraday cage built into your house. part of the dry wall etc...
They make this stuff just for such uses, and it keeps the spys busy finding new ways to defeat it.
Your car is also rather faraday caged as well. The steel sides block the signals, except with the windows.
I've been thinking of getting/making faraday cage wall paper, and with my aluminum blinds they should be great.

Yeah right. Sort of like saying the boat is fine except for the 6 HUGE holes in the hull. Don't expect too much RF shielding in your car.

I wish they would RF shield then no one would use their cell phones while driving around here!

This is why for descreet surveilance they use metal panel vans without windows. No interference other than what you bring in. Motor homes are also relatively RF insulated. Older ones.
