View Full Version : Squirrelly Lights -- Wacky Wipers (This one's Odd)

Here's a little twist on the "wacky wiper" syndrome that many of us have experienced. Has anyone else experienced a "squirrelly light" issue?
I normally leave my lights in the "auto" position. The lights come on automatically when it gets dark. They also come on automatically when the windshield wipers are activated (even in the intermittent mode).
Recently, I have noticed an intermittent "flash" of the interior lights on the dashboard. Today I pulled up close behind another car at a stoplight so I could watch my headlights in the reflection off his bumper. Sure enough, the headlights and the foglights both went off and then on again right at the "flash" period. It happens about every minute or so and does not appear to be related to the intermittent wiper function (i.e. not at the same time). I don't think it is related to the light sensor either since I couldn't detect any reason why it would be light/dark enough to cut the lights off and then on again (but this shouldn't matter anyway with the wipers on). Wipers seem to be working just fine.
Has this happened to anyone else? I am concerned that a switch is going south and that my headlights will fail -- probably at the worse possible time. I don't think the problem occurs when I move the light switch into the "Manual On" position. Will have to verify this.

What you have is a family of Gremlins living in your car. They probably got tired of MarauderMark's car and moved into yours.

Charlie, was your LCM ever replaced? The LCM is a common link between lights and wipers, all these gremlins may have a root in the LCM if it was not replaced.
Also general tech question regarding the light switch, do we use a relayed switch i.e. only relay voltage going through the switch or like on the older days does the full headlight power run through the main switch? I know I've heard of people adding relays but I wasn't sure if that was simply to move the lights out of the harness, relay the harness and run bigger wires from the battery to get more juice to the lights.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense I gotta run as I'm typing this

I just had this EXACT problem on my 2005 CVLX. I took it to the dealer and they replaced my wiper motor and multifunction switch. Both were covered under ESP.
EDIT: I do have an after market alarm/remote start installed. Don't know if that made either go out prematurely.

Please define "very expensive" in terms of a broad range of dollars and cents. :D
Charlie, was your LCM ever replaced?
Nope
Charlie i hope its nothing serious or too expensive to repair.

Charlie I'm having the same type of problem but not the interior lights doing anything. Never once had my lights turned on in Auto during the daytime until my wipers started acting up.
Charlie contact Ray The Dealer, he gave me a really good price on the LCM and as soon as Uncle Sam gets me my check I can get it and feel whole again.

Thanks for the feedback Chris. I can hear the "click" and see the radio display dim out/flash and the dash light go out momentarily. I first noticed this on my way to Hanover, PA in the rain back on 10 May. Didn't think much of it then.
My headlights have always gone on when the wipers are activated. I just leave the switch in the auto-light position all the time. This only causes problems when I am in a different car and forget to turn the lights on 'cause I am completely out of the habit. :o

I didn't start to have problems until after that weekend of heavy rain last month. Don't know if it has anything to do with it (probably not) but you never know.

I had the same exact issue. My lights would flicker like crazy to the point that it would just get too annoying to drive.
Dealer replaced a light module, wiper motor and harness.
Wrong...I just saw them last week moving into Dominick's car...That was last week, Dominick passed them on to Charlie...

Dealer price about $700 installed.......You may find one online for around $400 and do it yourself??
Get the dealer to diagnose it for you.....OBD II test to confirm is around $75??
FWIW, mine pooped out during year two and was replaced under factory warranty......these are very problematic parts!!:argue:
Good Luck!!

Me too. Same problems, and about the same fix. My OASIS report for this reads:
3/21/06 @ 23029 miles
replaced lighting control module (dash lights stay on)
replaced multi-function switch (wipers stay on?)
