View Full Version : Anyone installed a PA Perf 200amp alt
I just ordered one along with their premium wire kit.
Just wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on the install, performance, wire kits, etc...

I will be very surprised if the PA alternator works on your MM. As far as I know the ONLY alternators that work are an exact MM FOMOCO replacement part. This is due to the specific computer control of the unique alternator regulator. Report back on your install results. Good luck.

I will report back for sure. I thought I had read a number of posts where people were either talking about using one or did uise one. But we'll see.
I dont think there will be an issue because they DO use the 'white' regulator which is the version that is controller by sensing voltage on the system AND control by the PCM.
The Gray (used on the Cobra etc) regulator is onlky controlled by sensing voltage in the system. Which is why a cobra alt will not work on our systems.
So there should be no issue. But I will post back either way.

I got a 200amp from lincoln electric. The first one they sent me would not fit but they took care of that and sent me a second one. I made the wire kit my self and instal it my self. The new 200amp did not come with a clutch pullie but I kept the oem alternator with the clutch pullie just incase. I have had on issues at all with the 200amp one with no cluch pullie and it has been on for over a year. Plus it was less expencive than an oem replacement.

Todd, Any updates on your PA Performance alternator? They have petty strong claims of quality products on their website. I just had my second Motorcityreman 250 amp alternator go bad after only a couple of months. Installed by a VERY reputable mechanic(with me eyeballin' even) and they are failing! I'm possibly sliding over to the PA Performance side of things!

I've had a PA Performance 200 in ProRauder for 2+ years now. Originally they did not have the right regulator so I just swapped it for the one on the old alternator and it has been fine since.
Still cranking out the juice!

I have it here ready to install. They have the regulator thing worked out now. I didnt know it had been an issue. We have the white colored regulator. I think Cobras use the gray colored one.
I did some calculations on the crank pulley size used in our cars along with the alternator pulley the PA comes with which is a stock clutch style one. My motor, with the gt heads and all the other work I have done to it, should turn 7k easy. At 7k rpms, the alternator will be WELL above the safe rpm level which is 16k. I have been looking for an alternator pulley which will give me the best mix of idle charging capability and fairly safe high rpm. 2.75 looks like it.
But nmo one makes one. Biggest I can find in a underdrive kit is 2.5. So I may have one made.
If I cant get it worked out soon I am just going to put it on and not run high rpms till I find the pulley I want.
The quality of their work is top notch. I would highly recommend them. One of the guys there took a ton of time talking with me about pulley size and regulator differences. Most wouldnt have taken the kind of time he did. I think his name was Nick.

I just took my scorched nightmare alternator out(post pics later) and am waiting for the UPS man! I can't wait to have some electrical confidence! I have my yellowtop optima on the battery tender right now.

Got my alt and put it in...noticed there wasnt a clutch pulley...should I be worried? What is the real function of the clutch pulley anyway? Thanks!

Metco can hook you up with a pulley, but the spacer they supply is too thick. My favorite wrench had one in his tool box that was perfect, though.
OOPs, it is an 8-rib however.

And of course, the above post was the kiss of death to my alternator. It is out of the car right now and I had PA send me a clutch pulley and the grey regulator so I do not have to rely on the computer to make juice.
I'm not sure if this is going to work but I'm going to try anyway.

I got the PA Performace 200 Amp alternator and put it on...seems to be working just fine! Sorry about your trouble. High performance alternators are a hard commodity to acquire with "Quality" construction...I'm on my 4th Alternator!

I have the police 200 amp alternators in stock at work, do they fit? I'll eyeball one today when I go in. I dont have any high drain accesories, but it might be good to know just in case.
