First off, my US readers might not care about this. Before I start, it's ok by me if you don't!
So, I decided that I wanted to get the CVPI fuel tank shield installed on my Marauder even before I inked the deal to buy it. I have a little bit of familiarty with the fire issues surrounding very high speed impacts and Panther platform cars. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but whatever.
I asked the dealer to give me the same pricing the used car department would get which they did. I was quoted $253.00 for the part. After the magic was worked, the part was $199.00. The part was installed on my car today. My labour bill was $80.00, so .7h labour to install (115.00/hr), so I get a bill for $292.25.
I was a little shocked.... I'd assumed that the price quoted included installation? Why? Because most of the research I did on the Internet (all US sites) said that the sheild was about $100.00US, and about 1 hour to install (About $100.00).
I didn't say much and paid the bill. Now that I'm becoming a little mercurymarader.net savvy, I've also become familiar with fordparts.com. Now, if I look up part number 3W7Z-9B007-AA on fordparts.com, "street-price" is $113.00, if I order on-line, the part is $65.06, with $9.00 ground shipping.
$65.00?? I just paid, with a discount I might add, $200.00 for the same G$$Da$$ part? That's a 307% difference!!!! I have to pay 307% more for the same (safety-related) part because I live on the wrong side of the 49th parallel? Maybe I should have waited for my annual trek to North Carolina and bought it there? I shouldn't have to!!! I do intend to write a letter to Ford Motor Company of Canada requesting some sort of explanation for this price discrepancy. I don't think I'll take it up with the dealer.... they're only selling the part for (a discounted) generally accepted (very Canadian) price.
Yea, I know in the grand scheme of things it's only $135.00, not the end of the world, but I doubt many of you would mind getting a cheque for $135.00. It's a lot nicer than having to pay it.
Grumble.....
Double Grumble....
For fun (I think), I thought I'd price check a heater blower motor resistor I purchased for my '88 F150. Street price in Canada: $36.18. My wholesale discount price: $30.75. Fordparts.com street price: $22.00, on the internet: $16.17. My discounted price vs. Ford parts.... a 190% difference. More pillaging in the great white north....
GRRRR
