Is the Sirius wired into the radio (and if so, where?) or is it FM transmitter?

It is wired directly into the radio.
I was told if you Directly connect, It will improved audio performance..
I purchased the Directed Electronics - Car Installation Kit for SIRIUS Satellite Radio Receivers from BEST BUY.
It came with A FM relay and direct-connect audio cable. On the back of the stereo there is FM relay spot. It plugs in there.

So you tune to a specific FM station for the FM relay? do you ever get interference from other FM stations?

Yes ,, you tune to a specific station .
You will get absolutely NO interference from other FM stations because it is directly weird into the FM relay.
NONE AT ALL.. NOT EVEN A LITTLE…!
Well worth the $30.00 BUCKS...

I read up on the FM relay. It disconnects the normal antenna input when it senses that the sat radio is powered up, so that explains why interference is not an issue.
Has anyone seen something like this that uses a stereo input (as from the headphone jack of an MP3 player) instead of an FM input? That would allow the sat radio or an mp3 player or other audio source to play through the FM relay.

I was thinking about getting this for my car. I could add a RCA Y adapter and input my satellite and ipod (with an ipod who needs a CD changer?). This would be even a better connection for factory radios. There are other sellers selling similiar units.

Here are two more to choose from a seller I've bought from before. I bought the ipod w/text display on radio for my sisters Escape. Works great and seller very easy to deal with. Answered a bunch of questions with very quick response time, and fast shipping too.

Just be careful - I saw a few places where the price sounded great, but when I read the details, it did not come with the wiring harness. that was extra. I think this one has the harness, but I'd check with them before you send money, just to make sure you won't have to buy anything else (other than the RCA connectors)...
