If they are not dead, and if you can stand the smell, throw moth balls in the attic, they will smell up the house for a while but they dissapate after a while.You have to find where they are entering the structure and seal it so they don't return. This is a one solution, maybe not the best for everyone. Also be aware that moth balls are poisonous so be very careful with children and pets. "Paradichlorobenzene" is the chemical name .

I just got a family of racoons to move out of my attic, still have not gone up there to asess the damage.The night we had a graduation party for my twins a while back, one of the cubs must have fallen into one of the wall cavities, poor thing was yelping like a stuck pig.

You need to find out how they get in there and patch up the entrance.

Don't try moth balls, the squirrels are smart enough
to carry them and leave them at your front door !!

If you can get a local trapper's license, you can trap them yourself.
But first find out what the local ordinances say about their disposal.
Some don't allow you to take them to another county to release for fear of spreading rabies.....

Am I reading into that some areas may have laws that protect squirrels?

We had a problem with nutria damaging drainage canals. The sherriff sent the SWAT Team out on target practise and it worked!:)

If trapped inside they can be very destructive critters. If they can get in & out, find the entrance, chase 'em out or trap them, then repair the hole. Making absolutely certain they are out, all of 'em, before closing the entrance, or you're gonna have big trouble. So far as returning them to the wild, just let and trapped ones loose in the yard, and they'll be just fine. No worries with the authorities or PETA nut cases, it's where they came from. :D
