So... I have been getting into Cover's lately. Which ones do you like? Top of my list are:

Johney Cash - Hurt
Fall out boy - beat it
Alien Ant farm - smooth criminal
Marilyn Manson - tainted love
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams
Dope - Spin me right round
Korn - another brick in the wall
Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes
Chris Cornell - Billy Jean

These are real quick off the top of my head.

Have any you like?

Check out Mudvayne's cover of "King of pain" by the police. Type O Negative did a haunting cover of "Summer Breeze" which is really cool.

Dang Steve. The only one of those I've heard both versions of is Hurt. (It tops my list too.) I don't listen to much music made in the last two decades.

Others I like are;

Gloria - The Doors.
Stairway to Heaven - Frank Zappa.
Hey Jude - Tiny Tim.
Hard to Handle- Black Crowes.
All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix.

seeing that song live is unbelievable.

i'm not a fan of chris cornell's billie jean, but i will be seeing him on the 16th anyways.

I have heard and like these. I have recently really started to like "Another Day in Paradise" by Reel Big Fish. It is a Phil Collins cover. Nothing else really comes to mind right now. I am sure that a bunch of new bands have done original covers and I am just oblivious.

Thanks, Paul.
It's the first use of the term I can recollect, or if it was used in context by a DJ, I never paid any attention, or just let it pass.
Put it down to old guys learning new stuff, I guess. :)

What if the cover becomes more famous than the original hit? In this example, I'm talking about a song written by Chris Kristofsen, performed by Roger Miller: Me and Bobby McGee, and was one of his biggest hits. Later it was recorded by Janis Joplin, and became even bigger, actually her signature song.

Songs that have been recorded the most and sold the most copies? I'd say Dave Mann's Wee Small Hours of the Morning has to be right up there, and perhaps, Sinatra's version is about the best, I think.

Of course, some may be wondering who these people are. :D

Also wondering about when someone on the way up records a great song and gets some "play" then a big name comes along and "steals" it.

whoever beat me to the ramones cover of 'california sun', the vanilla fudge remakes = awesome!

amazing royal crowns - sin city (AC/DC)
amazing royal crowns - bloodstains (naked raygun)
aerosmith - remember walkin' in the sand (shangrilas)
alice donut - war pigs (black sabbath) ---- find this one, it rules!!!
blue oyster cult - kick out the jams (MC5)
blues brothers - soul finger (bar-kays)
briefs - come dancing (kinks)
cheap trick - ain't that a shame (elvis...right?)
dead boys - tell me (rolling stones)
dead kennedys - viva las vegas (elvis)
devo - satisfaction (rolling stones)
dirtbombs - anything off the "ultraglide in black" album (old motown covers)
donnas - strutter (KISS)
dread zepplin - their whole catalog is covers
go-nuts - hot for twinkies (van halen parody)
guns 'n' roses - anything off "the spaghetti incident?" album
humble pie - i don't need no doctor (i think ray charles)
joan jett and the runaways - rock 'n' roll (velvet underground)
joey ramone - 1969 (iggy and the stooges)
L7 - this ain't the summer of love (blue oyster cult)
MC5 - ramblin' rose (uhh...pretty sure it's ray charles...?)

smugglers - kings of the party (brownsville station)
tom petty - something in the air (thunderclap newman)

and any cover of the following songs has a decent chance at kicking ass:
otis redding - shake!
question mark and the mysterians - 96 tears
eddie floyd - knock on wood
edwin starr - 25 miles

Check out the album A Date With Elvis... classic Sun Records Rockabilly at it's best!!!

Ya I forgot to mention I Don't Care About You (Fear) covered by Guns and Roses.

Palasades Park -Ramones also a very fun one!

Also I prefer the New York Dolls version of Give Him A Great Big Kiss over the original. Nothing like hearing that open C chord and A minor on a vinyl!!!

re: "great big kiss", i like the dolls' version a bit better too. but sometimes i just like hearing mary weiss's (shangri-las singer) voice. she has a new project with the memphis garage band REIGNING SOUND that's a pretty good listen.

My favorite song by Shangri-Las has got to be Long Live Our Love... I don't care what anyone says, that song is so sweet and later The Beatles stole the melody and called it I'll Get You (in the end)

Both are good, but 60's girl groups are one of my favorites. Crystals doing Da Do Ron Ron (Oh I forgot The Rolling Stones did that one and did a great job too) and let's not forget The Loco Motion... screw Grand Funk Rail Road... they should have left it alone!!!

I'm not saying Grand Funk Rail Road is bad... I don't like them, but they really shouldn't have covered The Loco Motion thats all.

Doo Wop is the best nighttime crusing music ever! Nothing like hearing those same 4 chords over and over with nice melodys and the bassman vocals backing everyone up. I like The Students, Edsels, and The Belmonts had some good stuff too. I wish I had my CDs because I had about 7 or 8 Doo Wop CDs until they were stolen this year.
