This weekend, Dodge officially unveiled two Challenger Drag Race Package cars that made their inaugural runs down the 1/4 mile track in front of thousands of race fans at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals near Denver, CO. Based on the standard Challenger SRT8, each of the Drag Race Package cars features a completely stripped body that has the body sealer, sound deadener, and undercoat all removed. Additional components are also left out including the windshield wipers, HVAC system, air bags, rear seats, power steering, exhaust system, side-impact beams, rear bumper beam, and more. Further weight is saved by using composite and poycarbonate components, and overall a total of 1000 pounds has been shaved off the car. Additional changes include repositioning the engine for a better driveline angle, a slightly shortened wheelbase, a bolt-in crossmember, and solid engine mounts. Engine options include the 6.1L and 5.7L HEMI or the 5.9L Magnum Wedge. Mopar will build at least 100 of the cars to meet NHRA requirement, and they will be eligible to run in Comp, Super Stock, and Stock categories. Pricing will start in the low $30,000 range, and Mopar will begin taking orders in late August or September. Full details can be found in the press release after the jump.

It really reminds me of the good old days in the 60-70s when this was the accepted practice from the Big 3. Good to see it returning. Remember that Ford has done a similar thing by releasing for general sale a 2008 track prepared road race Mustang.

I really like the Challenger and I almost regret the Marauder, I mean sure its 4 doors roomier and nicer. But the Challenger is a true tribet to the 2 door large monster sedans of yesterday...I wish my Marauder was 2 door at times, like for when I pull up to a light and give it a rev...

Oh well

You guys are also missing it's not street legal. Only 100 made too, not worth it IMO. HIGH FIVE Mopar.

OH MAN!

I LOVE IT!!!!

Brings back memories of the Big 3 competing with;
No carpeting nor sound deadener, A/C-Heater & radio deletes, no power steering, aluminum bumpers, fiberglass hoods, acid dipped fenders, plexiglass windows!

At least MOPAR has the balls to build low volume INTERESTING cars.

Move Over Plymouth Approaching Rapidly,
but really MoPar actually stands for Motor Parts :

Mopar (short for MOtor PARts) is the automobile parts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_part) and service (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto_mechanic) arm of Chrysler LLC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_LLC). The term was first used by Chrysler in the 1920s and has been in continuous use ever since. Mopar parts are original equipment manufactured parts for Chrysler vehicles.
Mopar has passed into broader usage among car enthusiasts as an unambiguous reference to the Chrysler parent company, as the Chrysler name also refers to a company marque (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marque). The term has thus become an inclusive word for any Chrysler-owned brand, but generally any Dodge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge), Chrysler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler), Plymouth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_%28automobile%29), Imperial (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_%28automobile%29), or DeSoto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeSoto_%28automobile%29), and later American Motors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Motors) (AMC) or Jeep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep), vehicle. Thus, for example, a car club for owners of any Chrysler Corporation vehicle might describe itself as a club for "Mopar enthusiasts."

For you Canadians out there:

In the 1930s, the company created a formal vehicle parts division under the MoPar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MoPar) brand (a portmanteau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmanteau) of Motor Parts), with the result that "Mopar" remains a colloquial term for vehicles produced by Chrysler Corporation. The MoPar (later Mopar) brand was not used in Canada, where parts were sold under the Chryco and AutoPar brands, until the Mopar brand was phased into the Canadian market beginning in the late 1970s

I'm telling you, in two years those Challengers will be all over the place...SRT-8's, R/T's, V-6's...just like the 300. You'll be glad you have a Marauder!

And forever after in 20+ years there will be dead or rusted out almost dead 300's challenger's and charger's littering the yards of Moparians.
