Charlie, Hallmark ignores us, and rightfully so. They probably don't carry enough Star Wars cards to make all SysAdmins happy anyway.
All we want is this:
# cd pub
# more beer
:D
We don't want flowers, watering them is dangerous near computers

In case you don't appreciate us geeks, remember what we have to put up with on a daily basis.

Oh, and Gordon, I've talked to my fellow geeks. You computer will be 'upgraded' to a Pentium 180, with the 'division' bug. ;) Good luck!

Wow that website is down bring back memories.
Just remember when talking to the other techies aobut this, don't sit with you back to the door, the problem might walk in the door. Luckily we all used a code to speak of problems and not their names.
Wicked witch or 3 east.
Wicked withc of 1 west.
Email overloader.
etc...
Email overloader was standing behind me. I didn't know, luckily she was as clueless about who email overloader was as she was about emailing 100 mb documents.

our IT people at work suck, I'd be happy if we'd upgrade to windows 3.11 or something. the router crashes 4-5 times a day, and the server usually cant do its upload to the mothership each night, so it screws up the next days stuff. I could sell stuff, and make money if the computers would work once in a while...
so for sysadmin day, I'm gonna unplug the DSL and call tech support and act dumb like the light is still on...

Quake days are best. The whole department does nothing but play quake all day. Safeway Canada has no tech support other than the support hotline, and no problems get solved, but the day is a blast. You can subsitute Halo or the like instead.

Surfing the web on a secure system isn't too bright. If you are unfamiliar with the fact that nearly every gov't entity uses a proxy server and URL filtering/monitoring solutions that provide them with every minute detail of what you browsed, let me get that right out in the open.
Like I said, the gov't isn't "most employers" and you need to behave with appropriate self control. I will not browse the web on my work machine the same way I do here at home. At work I use a completely separate wireless/cablemodem Internet feed and my own laptop.
Basically...."Don't ***** where you eat"
I am the sysadmin, I never forget or lose sight of the tremendous responsibility given me to keep our systems up and available. I also never forget the incredible amount of discretion and trust given to me, and will never do anything to violate that trust.
Yes, I can read your mail, grep your files, view your keystrokes if I wanted to do so, but the fact is I would not betray the trust placed in my position.
So your secrets are safe, until you step over the line and do something wrong.
Then, I sell you out to the authorities, make no mistake about that.

Security in most firms is a joke. Computer techs have free reign on all computers in all areas.
Ever wonder why some computer techs form their own companies and succeed at the expense of former employers.
