What is the best MPG RWD car. Proven not just claimed.

Probably a Chevy Chevette, Vega, Ford Pinto or 86 Toyota Carolla. Just a guess.

My cousin has an '08 C6 Vette with a 6 speed manual and it gets 32-34 MPG at 75 MPH on the Interstate!!

I'd be willing to bet that string of old stuff you suggested Dom won't come close to that....AND a couple of them won't even go 75 MPH!!!:shake: :D

I agree, it's hard to beat the new vettes for mpg's. The smaller BMW's like a 318 come close. I heard Lotus sells a diesel Elise in Europe that can hit 110mpg.

I believe a Miata should get in the mid to high 30s on the highway.

Can we add the criteria of "best mpg rear drive car that does not make you feel like less of a man for driving it"?

Camaro, T/A and Vette with the LSX series of engines. I know several people with Camaros and T/As and they get mid 20's city and low 30's highway, the 6th gear is the key.

I will admit this: the "Monster" Miata with the Ford 5.0 HO engine is more manly than its 4 cylinder counterpart. Unfortunately, the former doesn't count here when it comes to great gas mileage.

I would have to agree with the F-Body and Corvette inputs. Even my '93 Z28 with LT1 and 6-speed would get 28-30 mpg on the highway at 75-80 mph and my '91 Camaro with 5-speed and 305 TPI motor would get 28-30 mpg on the highway, too at those same speeds.

Basically you would need a car with a relatively efficient engine, good aerodynamics, lighter weight, and good tranny and rear end gearing. Since the Corrvette pretty much meets all of those requirements, it makes sense that it gets that kind of gas mileage.

I think most of the other "manly" RWD cars will be in the low-to-mid 20's for mpg...

While it may not be the Best MPG RWD car ...

Routinely get 22-24MPG for city driving. *worst ever was 20MPG

Best highway mileage todate was 31.2 (on a 900 mile trips - cruise-control set @ 75MPH, A/C on). *Consistently hovers @ ~28MPG.
87octane tune.
3.55 RAR.
routine maintenance is always addressed; fluid and filter changes, U-joints greased, all bushings lubed, etc..
tire pressure checked weekly.
routinely cleaned and polished.
minimal trunk clutter.

And NO! I'm no granny/geezer driver. http://www.geocities.com/gdmjoe/evil.gif

Rear Drive MPG -- Secrets!
Rear Gears, tranny gears (read that 2 OVERDRIVE gears), weight, efficient engine.
Now for Vettes -- the C5/6s with MANUAL 6sp have 2 overdrive gears! That and a 3.42 rear (I think) is what gives them great mileage, IMHO.
My 2000 C5 Vette gives us 24/25 HWY mpg and it has a 3.15 rear and only a 4sp Auto.

Got to be the 6-speed. A friend with a '99 Coupe with 6-speed, heads, cam, CAI, long tube headers, full exhaust, tune, etc still pulls down 26-28 mpg on the highway with a dyno-tuned 440 rwhp.

And here I thought everyone was going to say Smart Fortwo.

Corvettes get good MPG who knew? Not me.

There is a "Tata" that sells for around 2,5K in India. It can sit four and has its engine located rear. Even if it burns a little bit more das than a Smart, it makes it a savings winner because of its tag price. Now, the car is one of the ugliest thing I ever saw...
