I'm in search of another MM right now. I find the one I want I sell mine for what I owe on it just to get it gone.
However... the older M5's have Always appealed to me. I'm seeing some for around 25k. Yes...its about 10k more than a decent MM. But the idea of owning my 2nd dream car is avalible... (The Marauder was one of those must own cars)
I know BMW's are very dealer dependent. However... Can you still work on them yourself? Such as brakes, fluids, basic stuff, ect....
Just curious. Give me your 2 cents.

Most every service requires computer intervention, fluid changes you may be OK, but just about everything on those cars is computer controlled.
I knew someone with an M5. He got rid of it for a CTS-V, one reason was because he was getting 10-12mpg out of it.
It was quick, and had a 6spd gearbox, and he liked it, but he said it cost way too much to maintain. There are scheduled services that must be done and he said they cost over $2k.
Neat cars but for a DIY car guy BMW doesn't leave much for us and their service and maintenance charges are high.

Great info. Thanks.
The problem is I drove one today... an 02' and my gawd it was great. Even the 540i's I've driven are awesome cars. It just scares me to have a dealer dependent car. Also I have so many hookups at Ford. BMW would most likely bend me sideways with a pineapple up mah butt.
I can tell you from owning 2 Mercedes that all service work is high $$$$. Good quality but high prices. The other side to the coin is the lenght of time between service is 10,000 miles or more. Every other service costs 200.00 more due to the extra things they do. The less expensive oil change is 250.00 plus and the other one runs close to 500.00. They do check the cars out very well. The older one has 168K on it and runs and drives well with not many things failing in that time. Hope this helps you on costs.

BMW = Bring my wallet
Although i agree the M5's are VERY nice looking machines indeed. Just that german cars are $$$$ to maintain.
400bhp to!

I raced a 2008 M5 at Norwalk yesterday.
He ran consistant hot laps of 13.2 @ 111.
He was a well dressed, preppy fellow, willing to boast his car's msrp was nearly 90k. He also beat quite a few cars and all the Marauders that day.
I made it a point to show him he over spent.
Once.
That was all it took. :lol:

That blue one posted is exactly the color I want...its so purty.

Find out what the 50k or 80k service was, one of the higher mileage services was not sitting well with my friend. Probably had timing belts in there, which I'm SURE isn't cheap!
Yeah, 111 trap speed and only a 13.2, hmmm...that's one high ET for the mph! I'd stop boasting and work on my driving skills

A friend has owned BMWs since 1972. I have swung many an engine w/ him.
He owned a series of 5 V-8 that the blocks only lasted 25K. Gave up and bought a Saleen Mustang.
The process of impregnating the al block doesn't work and the rings wear it out.
The 7 V12 were infamous for wiring harness issues to the point of having the enire harness replaced.

Well, Ill be that guy, I love the M5's. They are also in my top 3 dream cars. Stock to Stock there is no comparison, the M5 wins, sorry but its true. and Im talking about the old one's too , not the new V-10s that rev to 9500 rpm. Their style is par none, interior creture comforts are amazing, and BMW is always on the cutting edge for their generation of autos. Do I mod my MM to make it more like a BMW, yes. HID's , INterior Trim Pieces, adding a blower to approach their power levels, GPS/TOuchscreen NAV, etc. every mod I have made is to improve my car, it makes it my own, but it is moving toward what was stock on the high end luxury sports sedans. Those who haven;t owned BMW's or driven in M5's 6's , 740's 745's 750's, hell even a 550 , etc will hate me, but O well , its my opinion.

Someone else at the track made mention the trap speeds did not jive with the ET's.
When he first got there, he only ran mid 14's.
It was like night and day, he just started dropping times after one run.
Perhaps it was his launch. I noticed he ****y footed off the line.
No wheel spins, no burnout warm ups.
I have the slip where I ran him, info below:
rt = 1.034
60' = 2.390
330 = 6.187
8th = 9.116
mph= 84.94
1000'=11.575
1/4 = 13.599
mph = 112.21
This was his best trap speed, but not best et as I said before.
13.2x was along the lines of his best trap speed.

My family has owned a number of BMW's since 1975 and I was active in the BMW club. They are great cars to drive. Used as transportation out of warranty and they can put you in the poor house.

LV knows exactly what I mean...
There's just a feeling you get when you're behind the wheel of one and you cherrish a clutch like I do. But its the feeling of being ***** by large gorilla's at the dealer that scares me.

Oh yea, HORRIBLE driver. If you cut a good RT you were already 5 car lengths ahead of him. I can do that 60' on foot. Man with an R/T like that I would of went home after showing up in an M5...hahahahahaha Thats enough time to walk to the pits, get a drink, come back and finish the run.
Moral of this story is you guys need to help me find a blue MM with dark interior with under 45k miles so I don't do something stupid and take on a financial burden greater than my wife.

How about a CTS-V? They come with a 6sp manual option, 400horse LS2, nice creature comforts
I do agree about the M5, it's a nice car, just difficult to own.

Hard part is I vowed to never own another GM product after the countless cady's my mother has had. They've left her stranded sooooooooooo many times. Which is why I lean towards the beemer. She's beat the crap out of the 2 she's had and put 100k on them and they still run awesome. That is a good idea though I didn't think about the CTS-V's. I'll take a peak on ebay.

Before i got my MM I testdrove a 740iL. I wasn't too impressed by the power but for a 4.4l V8 in such a big car I thought it did well.
The rear legroom was asesome, I thought it was very comfy too and nice styling. I think it was a 98 though, and the mileage was high enough it was at timing belt replacement time...
It had like 80k and the dealer said they would've taken $10k for it...

My friend had a 750iL that we used to joyride when we were in high school. It was his parents car. I remember doing burnouts with that thing. It was very fast. 0-60 specs on the 1990's 750 cars was 6.5 seconds. I almost traded my MM for one about 6 months ago. There was a dealer that had a lower mileage 750iL that was willing to trade the MM plus $4,000 for the BMW. I backed out because I didn't have $4k to throw around at the time for one of my big ideas. I do own the MM outright but it just didn't make sense to spend even more than I had paid (cash) for the MM in the first place, considering how little miles I've driven the MM too.
