Not much chance my OEM fronts or rears will ever see 6 years old. :D Now I got go out and find out when mine were made. I know the "secret" code now.

I have discarded many a set of otherwise tread-legal tires because I didn't like the way the rubber was checking from UV. I towed a car once w/ weather checking tires, with a dolly, and the tread separated on the highway. After that, no more chances on questionable dried out tires.

I believe my Scorchers on my Bullitt wheels could be about that age.

Yeah I checked my spare tires, my winters tires and 255/55 kdw2's were all made in early/mid 2006. I had heard you could check when they were made but never knew how until I saw the video.

So supposedly this is for tires that are not being used or have not been used.

So called "new tires"

When they are on your car for long times they don't dry out?

UV kills tires. I have some old tires on muscle cars, that are always garaged and the cars are rarely driven, and they are just as supple as new.

The degradation takes place - driven or not.
UV and ozone are two big culprits but not the only ones.
Just because the outside looks good does not mean that the layers in between aren't getting ready to come apart!

Yep that is true and if you watched the video it showed the layer of tread that is on top of the steel belts came off, side wall was fine.

This was a really good and informative thread. I never knew about a date code on a tire and now I do. Thanks for the information.

Well, pictures of my old Mustang from '91 show it with the same tires as it has now. I think it's time to get a new set...

I was just told my old fronts are drying out, don't go on a long trip. IE Buy new tires from tirerack. Glad the fronts are on sale.

Earlier this spring, I bought a 77 F150, with new-looking Firestone FR tires on it. They were probably made in the 80's. Didn't take long before they started coming apart, just like in the video.

It's riding on beatiful new American Racing Torq Thrusts and BFG Radial TAs now. Wish I could figure out how to stick pics on here.

Me too!! I have a set of 3102's (31st week of 2002) in the garage. Looks like they "expire" in about 3 weeks.
