View Full Version : 7 8 cylinder death

So from what i understand 7 - 8 cylinder death occurs mainly because of heat and a bad cooling design.
Would a product like a Water Meth injection prevent this by lowering the amount of heat that the engine has? Plus it's other benefits.

Water-methanol only cools the incoming air charge and the intake manifold...it doesn't cool the engine nor cylinders.
Its' main purpose is to raise the octane by using straight methanol, and to cool the intake air as it vaporizes....both of which help to avoid detonation.
Detonation is the cause of almost all S/C engine failures.
7-8 cylinders die on Marauders because there is no rear cylinder head coolant outlet...the coolant must turn around and flow back out the front of the cylinder head.
7-8 run hotter than the other cylinders....therefore they are MOST likely to detonate.....BOOM!
Bye Bye: piston, rings, piston wrist pin, rod....pick one or more.

Is the cooling an 03 as well as an 04 problem?

Most definately! Go for a cooling mod.

As anyone tired the Evans Cooling System?

would vents in the fenders with piping leading to the back corner of the motor help?
Mike (KB-MARAUDER-S) has the trans am vents that lead down the the headers
Any benefit to that?

Meth can help N/A cars but its gain is minimal. I'm running it on my stang. Its great stuff.

there is a rear cooling mod for the MM. One of the vendors sells it.

do a rear cooling kit it helps out alot before the kit i was running about 220 degrees with the ac on now with the ac on it runs about 200 degrees

Same here, just not too thrilled about pulling the intake manifold off my engine.

Big question is why in the world did the engineers decide to block off the rear passages with freeze plugs instead of allowing for an 'even flow' of coolant throught the rear of the heads.?
I am doing this in conjunction with a 180 T-stat when I pull everything off for my headers install. I was hesitant to pull the intake and remove material too, but this really should have been a part of the manufacture. I hope to get lots of miles out of my Marauder, and this can only help.
Relatively innexpensive, one time job, makes sense to me. I am glad I waited fo the "Evenflow" kit, as this makes the most sense. Add in Dennis' crossover tube modification and I couldn't resist...
With the right fitting, we could even add a water temp gauge in the mix.....

You should consider helping me install mine so you have one under your belt when you do yours... PM me about an Even-Flow party.

I read on even flows site that us trilogy guys should only do the driver side mod that the passenger side its a issue with the trilogy kits....well not a issue but a questionable install.

I am looking at this for my Trilogy car.

Thats very interesting how does the "style 2" work? does it only connect to the driver side head?

I saw that in person when Big Joe P had the car. Looked good, but I doubt it will help. :D

I wonder if you need to remove the transmission for option #2 and will it work on an N/A motor?
Looks very nice!

I just got my evenflow kit this morning.... I wonder if a combination of the two kits would make for a better outcome... Nice find Merc. That kit looks like a great option. :thinker:

Detonation is why I run Meth... not for the cylinder cooling.
But It does cool my blower down. Maybe helps the intake charge stay more consistent too.
If you are sc'd I personally feel you're nuts if you don't run it for safety.

My next merc will get an evenflow kit then if the trans comes out an LDC Chicago kit.

Any LDC-Style mod requires removal of the transmission. The other potential issue will be with your heater operation because the Marauders take their heater core coolant feed from a different place than the Cobras/Mach 1s do. Also those kits will not directly adapt into the plumbing of the cooling system as you receive the kit. There will be additional plumbing/adapters you will need to track down.
Don't get me wrong, the kits will bolt up to the engine itself, but it is not a "complete ready to go" kit. That is why we designed ours specifically for the Marauder with dual head fittings and different brass adapters, because our standard Cobra kits would not address all the plumbing differences.
