When a BMW 335i owner in Munich became bored with his black coupe, he hired a team to wrap it in white tape. Two days later, he drove home in his refreshed "Alpine White" coupe (with an M3-appearing black roof). No, it's not normal tape. It's a special 3M wrap, and the process is known as "foiling." Apparently, the German military has been using the process (with an olive drab tape) for some time now. Likewise, the process is popular with race teams and taxi companies. Available in countless colors, the tape itself is thick enough to protect the paint from minor chips and nicks, and it can be left adhered to the surface for 3-4 years without damage. Adhesion isn't a problem either, as the tape can even withstand an automatic car wash without peeling off.

Personally I think this is a great idea for people who maybe lease a vehicle or have a collectors car that want to drive it a lot and are worried about the paint. Slap one of these wraps of the same color and not worry about their paint getting messed up.

I always thought about something like that. Interesting. No way would it look as good as regular paint though but still cool.

That would look pretty cool from afar - my question is waxing and getting that shine, and what happens when it scratches and stuff that must be a pain to peel off and reapply.

Also whats the peel off damage?

These wraps on cars are amazing and do look like real paint even close up. But, the cost is very expensive about $2,500-2,800 to do a car. Also, there is not alot of information on what happens if you try to remove the wrap after 2-3 years outside in the sun.

I like white too. I would have used a brighter, less nasty/pearly white though. I'd take that car over a DTR at least!

I don't have the "special edition" or racing flag crap people put on their cars either, but they have real MM's.

I imagine that would be really fun to remove!

It would be pretty cool if I had the money to throw around, but I am poor.

Imagine the effects you could do with the layering. I would never vynl this car, but like a sleeker car like a firebird or some two door. You could do some sick ghost flames and stuff.

I really want to do the Tool Lateralus album accents around a car - like a 350z or something.

Eric,
It's a real Marauder. It was a BLK MM that had been painted a "dove/off white". Was being sold last year or the year before by Les Stanford Cadillac in Dearborn,Mi.

The badges are done by a company called D-tech(IIRC) in the Detroit Metro area.

It's real strange that whenever the white Marauder shows up, it's always on a lot and not in anyone's driveway.

Hey we can all go buy black marauders or silver ones and make our own Blue Marauders.

#2 04 Blue on the way, just let me wrap it up for you.

that's pretty awesome, I've heard of it long ago but I didn't have a car then so didn't really think much of it.

But now . . . BLUES FOR EVERYONE!

Ive seen allot of cars with this and it doesn't look so good on closeup, it's not as shiny as paint and it scratches easy.

Over here they use this on taxi cabs. Then remove it, do a "speedometer service" and sell the car. And the buyer has no idea that the the car has done 200.000 miles as a taxi.

I saw a brief piece on speed about this, not easy as one would think. The car has to come apart in certain areas to give the appearence of paint. But the shine as stated on the show can vary between colors but is noticiably dull compared to paint.
