damn... funny that the block gave way before any of the internals. The last motor i've witnessed do that was an old 5.0

Now I know where the term "grenaded the engine" came from.

The neat thing about a diesel is that they won't pre-detonate. The fuel isn't injected until it's at or near TDC. Assuming the block, head gaskets, and rotating assembly are strong enough you can run all the boost you want.

OTOH, Feeding 103psi boost in a gas engine would certainly cause detonation long before the pistons ever reach TDC. Most likely it would spin backwards as the pistons shatter.

Shut up Adam, you don't own a Ranger either. Unfortunately, a Cummins block probably wouldn't have done that. :(

The idea of runaway diesels is interesting...so in that scenario the turbo oil seal blows, causing engine oil to get forced through the turbo and into the engines intake? Thus even if you cut diesel fuel, it'll just run run run on engine oil until it over-revs and blows or runs outta oil and seizes?

Greatest. Forum. Ever.

The guy that posted that, Is in the process of building a twin turbo 6.0 diesel ranger!

Close. The oil is not forced through the turbo, it's drawn through by vacuum.

I never seen a run away diesel in the Army. Maybe that's because we were always pulling turbos off them at the slightest signs of trouble.

I was still thinking about that today, and was thinking a big axe or something might be handy in that scenario...

Chop one of two things in a runaway gone bad:

- the oil feed to the tubo

- the intake tube coming off the turbo

Wouldn't disconnecting either of these two stop the engine? OK maybe on some huge engines this isn't possible, but hey, maybe an axe is a good tool for diesels?
