View Full Version : Sticky Street tires
For those of you that have very high HP cars what do you you suggest for street tires. The GM is blowing the tires off at all speeds and is not really safe to drive till I can get the power to the ground. I am looking for help on this. What are you using that can hold 600 RWP plus! Thanks in advance! :burnout:

I just answered this exact question on your original post, but Nitto street drags, 305/35/18 is what I run. Very good tire and pretty long lasting.
I was running about 350/350 N/A and couldn't have made them spin when hot without turning my driveshaft into a pretzyl.

There is nothing out there that I am aware of.
Drag Radials are just that drag radials, a crappy street tire and a crappy track tire, nothing but a compromise.
I recently switched to the Falkens. The only other tire in the proper size is the Goodyears.
You will need to change to a drag strip tire to get traction.

I'm with Kiljoy. The Nittos are a good "compromise" with a definite bias to racing. If you can afford to replace the tires every 10k or so, this would be my recommendation.

Go wider, maybe bigger too.
Rub a dub dub John renames his GM the Tub...
must be another option.

The Nittos will not stick at less then 60* no matter what.

True enough. But I've found that it doesn't take more than a mile of street driving at 55-60F ambient for them to be warm enough to stick at least as well as a standard tire. And don't forget that on the street you should be acting like you have a big stick. Walking softly, that is. Putting 600hp to the pavement is something best reserved for the track on suitably heated tires.

John in your other post you mentioned they broke loose at 100mph? What rear gear ratio are you running?
4.30 and it may be a little to much.

I remember someone last year at MVV had to go with 3.27's to use all his power. It had a non standard blower in it, Cobra?

Also, you could always just run MT ET Streets.

I must have had a unique set then. The very first time I ever drag raced was in November 2005 at Cecil County Race Way. It was in the low 50's, I was running Nitto 305 DR and ran a 12.035 with no tire spin off the line and a 1.7 60' time. This was the case in every instance afterward. The only time this was not true is when I hit some oil on the track and lost some traction, but never at the launch. I now run Micky Thompson DR and find they are even better. I was told at the very start that a great burnout is vital. I smoke up real good before the launch and have had ZERO tire spin. Just my .02

With my light fox the only thing that would stick are Mickey ET Street Drag radials. they are an incredible tire and can make anything stick on the street. However there is a slight downfall. With them being one of the stickiest they are also the softest so don't last as long. The very sticky ones are the hoosiers but have no tread but a little stripe.
Nitto's are the hardest DR's avalible. I'm actually going to put some on my fox since I do drive it daily at times. And they are more wet weather friendly.
Great information here guys and thanks for the help. It will be easier to decide on what to use.

I don't know what you were racing in '95.
With well over 500RWHP and a PI Nitto DR's are out matched.
Looking at my pic I think I did a great burn out.
The bottom line is a DR is a compromise for the street and the track. At over 500RWHP it is dumb to compromise on tires.
Why not just compromise on the engine and go for 475RWHP?

Best compromise I've run is the Nitto 295/45. Best bet is a very gentle right foot, cause NOTHING will hold 600 rwhp on the street.

With the correct size for the car the Mickey's and Hoosiers will.
I can hook in 1st gear as long as I don't "shock" the tires. I have jack for weight on the back too...
The problem is two fold for the track. I would remove the 4:30 gears and go with a 3:55 or 3:27 setup. This will reduce the rotation and spin. Secondly you need to have a custom set of wheels. I would recommend a 15' wheel size because you have a better variety of tires sizes. I think you need a 4.5 back space on the wheel. If a 30 inch tires does not fit then I would go with a 28'.

What are your rpms at the trap w/ the taller gears?

No, but they have alot more weight on the rear end, and weight transfer. My car hooks with an auto-x suspension. I have 0 weight transfer. These cars squat at launch like a fat lady jumped in the trunk.
The GS-D3s and ET street radials work great for me (granted, I have quite a bit less power). I know several people running ET street radials on high horsepower applications with no problems. I too am wondering where you are in the RPMS at the trap. With your power and ratio, I would think you'd be running out of gear in the 1/4.
I remember someone last year at MVV had to go with 3.27's to use all his power. It had a non standard blower in it, Cobra?
That was tom doans car.
John in your other post you mentioned they broke loose at 100mph?

John, if you know your 1/4 MPH, you can use this calculator (http://www.f-body.org/gears/) to determine your RPM.

Would adding weight over the tires be a solution?
