Cliff notes:
there is a 4 digit code on your tire, can be on either side.
If you buy new tires or if you consider your tire new it may not be.
The code can be like this (4204) or (2601) decoded this means the tire was built the 42nd week of 04 and the other one is 26th week of 01.
Many stores sell tires that are about 5 or 6 years old as new and they are not and can be dangerous they dry rotted on the inside and can have a bad blow out.
mod's this might be a good idea to make this a sticky
