View Full Version : Favorite roads?

On the 20th I take off for vacation in Tennessee.
I'm looking forward to a favorite road. I always love driving US 129 from south of Maryville TN to US 74 in NC. This is a great stretch of road. It follows the southern boundry of Great Smokey Mountain National Park. It's smooth, well cambered and scenic. Most of the drivers will pull over for you if you are going faster. I love this road.
At the halfway point there is a little burg called Deal's Gap with a store that sells sandwiches and Cokes. You can buy a Tshirt that says something like "Deals Gap, 318 turns in 11 miles".
Here's a link to a site about Deals Gap: Tail of the Dragon (http://www.tailofthedragon.com/dragon.html)
Into NC the road follows the shoreline of a beautiful lake. When you reach US 74 take a head northeast toward Cherokee. This road parallels the ridges and is straighter than 129.
When you get to Cherokee take another left and head west into the park. The road through the Smokeys is frequently crowded and slow but the scenery makes it worth the trip.
Take the road through the park to the Sugarlands Visitor Center (just before you exit the park) and make another left on Little River Road to Wear Valley.
At Wear Valley make another left on US 321 and head back to Maryville.
The entire circuit totals about 190 miles. If you have a soul and stop to enjoy the scenery it can take all day. I love this road.
What are your favorites?

Dan, I love to drive, and I've had the pleasure of driving a lot of roads. I love the historic Route 66, and I've traced that 3x in my life, from downtown Chicago to the infamous end at the Santa Monica Pier. Great drive, but hard to follow at times these days, a lot has been run over, or ignored.
I've also traced the Lincoln Highway, another historic road disappering from our view.
At least the US Government is good for something, which is preserving my all time favorite drive, the Natchez Trace. Lookie here...www.nps.gov/natr . A web search by "Natchez Trace" will bring up a host of other sites, if anyone is interested.
My next favorite, is the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway. Lookie here...www.blueridgeparkway.or g

dwasson,
Continue the dragon ride with a run on Cheohala Skyway. It goes back down to Tellico Plains. The curves are much smoother, sweeping curves with good pavement and great views. Sort of like the Blue Ridge Parkway without the traffic.

The Banff Jasper Highway, specifically the old bit of Highway 93a.
I took the Marauder for a burn late in the spring. I tell you, this car was designed for that highway. A couple more pics:
The highway runs about 300 kms (150-170 miles) from Jasper to Banff in the south. It runs through this valley:

Fantastic scenery. I haven't driven much in the States, but I'm willing to bet that it rates in the top 1 most stunning drives :)
My second choice would be the Alaskan Highway from Northern BC into the Yukon.

Dwasson,
If you are in NC you should head up to Boone....go to the Daniel Boone Inn....most sure fire way to test the MM suspension is after eating at that place....all the homemade country fixin's you could every imagine all served up at once on a "Lazy Susan" (That is a rotating table for all you non-southerners, not a Retarded cousin)...
Whooeeee.....:D

Right on, Glenn. I last did the Jasper-Banff thing in October 2000, and most recently did Edmonton-Calgary-Idaho-Spokane while cutting through the southern edges of BC in August of 2001.
With the right tunes on the radio, the drives were absolute mind-boggling. In 2000, I just happened to have some soft airy electronic/trance stuff in the rental car's CD changer (Moby, Dido, ATB, Delirium, etc.). In 2001 it was more along the lines of King Crimson (the first 3 albums), Gowan, and some late Beatles.
Looking through the digital video footage I took as I drove, the combination of breath-taking scenery and mood-enhancing soundtrack is absolutely mind-numbing.
Besides that corner of the world, I very thoroughly enjoyed the brief stint along Skyline Drive (just north of BlueRidge) coming down to Cooter's Garage, in May 2001. No music soundtrack there, I was in the WS6 with my opened-up exhaust which was in itself music to my ears as I alternated between powering through sweeping curves and enjoying the bark of the semi-muffled LS1 under engine-braking.

Cool Steve. I like that drive through Blue Ridge too. Last time I did it though was a bout a year ago, and I was pulling a 3 ton behing a company truck in winter. Not fun, but a good curvy drive nonetheless :)

I've driven route 44 in northern PA twice now, on the way home from spring/fall Carlisle shows; first with my old Impala SS and later in the MM.
It has hills, flats, straights and LOTS of curves. Beautiful forest/scenery for most of the way, and not much traffic. Gas up first, though; not a lot avail. along the way.

I like Route 32 along the Delaware River. I usually go north on Route 611 and come south along the river. Most of it runs next to the Delaware Canal. In the winter you can see ice formations from the rock face on the side of the road. I usually hop off of this at Route 263 and head back to Lahaska. If you continue south you can hit New Hope. Most weekends this ends up like a parade since the town is packed, but heads turn for the Marauder.

Well I have to say I-76 between the Nebraska state line and Denver. I got her up to 135 M.P.H., then onto U.S. 34 in Estes Park. This car handled incredibly well in the mountain curves. I am really impressed with my car now.
