A couple of days back my pc (HP Pavillion) that had Norton loaded started acting funny. The next day windows wouldnt start, even in safe mode. Later, I couldnt even do the radical reload (and lose everything). Call HP and Norton, nothing they could do. It was 4 years old so I figured maybe it was due. Well, I bought a new PC and Norton 360 and we will see how long this one lasts. I read someplace there is a virus that works off pop up pictures, like when you click on a thumbnail to make it bigger. I know the Norton worked with regular downloads but I think it got zapped on one of those other kind of viruses. Damn.
My new pc shall stay porn free I think!

If you really need anything off the old PC you might be able to attach the hard drive from the old system to the new system and copy what you need. Of course make sure all your anti-virus, etc are all up to date.

I use AVG from grisoft for all my non-work systems. There is also spybot in a free version.

How did you come to the conclusion it was a virus?

Perhaps the OS went foul.
Windows 98 was notorius for just .... going bad over time.

Did you try to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS?

Hah! Im going to imagine my home pc is my work pc and do my best to stay porn-free. Re the hard drive, could even go into safe mode, couldnt even go into the reformat harddrive. It was for sure a virus though. Porn free after 24 hours plus, think Im gonna make it!

I lost TWO computers thanks to Norton.......NEVER AGAIN!!!:argue::mad2::shake:

Try Avast Free as mentioned before or you might like BitDefender?? Both are un-intrusive and take very little memory to run while Norton is VERY intrusive and gobbles up memory and is constantly doing stuff in the background!!

Another thing to consider is that Norton is the NUMBER ONE hacker target so you are apt to get whacked by sheer numbers!!

Dump Norton and live better!!

I run Trend Micro PC-illin and can stroll through almost anything online. It's not free, but as in many (but not all) things in life, you get what you pay for.

I have superantispyware.com (cheesy name - free download) and never, never get viruses. I have a Google tool bar with pop-up blocker. I do my share of porn surfing and looking at crap that would make a catholic priest blush, Try the spyware site I mentioned and you will like it. Takes me about 30 minutes for a complete scan then you have to restart the computer to quarantine everything.

You are aware you need to BOOT from a disk (not the dead hdd) to reformat right?

May I buy your old HP for a dollar so I may fix it? ;)

That's really good since anti-spyware prevents malware not virus'. :D

Windows defender works fine and it's free.

Having Comcast internet access I get MacAfee for free and I have several other free and paid programs I run. Don't have to go to porn site to get infected. I've had viruses try to download while trying to view someone's myspace page. That's why I write my own coding for layouts.

Webroot- Spy Sweeper is a good program to buy. It saved one of my old computers from total meltdown. Had spent weeks trying to fix it and in less than an hour after loading Spy Sweeper up on it was running like new again.

There is a really bad virus going around now that just wiped out my laptop. The IT guys @ work had to reformat the drive - could not access any files. It did get progressively worse like yours.

I use AVG, and it has saved me from a few viruses (d@mn limewire)

Before the file is fully downloaded it will pop up with a message telling me its infected and asks if i want to ignore, clean, or delete the said file.

AVG FTW :D

I have been using AVG Free since it was recommended on this site about 2 years ago.

AVG has found viruses, but they never managed to do any harm to my several machines running this AV.

Norton 360 blows. I installed a copy on one of my 'test' machines at home and tried it for a few days.

It is worse than any Norton product I have dealt with. And would not recommend this AV anyone.

Resource pig. And is too damn expensive.

Just my .02

Mike.

All Windows goes bad over time, except Vista it starts bad.

I think maybe his bios crashed or something.

I use trend Micro PC Cillin Doesn't kill your computer when running in the background.

I like BitDefender.
Just has the main essentials at a good price. Because it doesn't have all the other bells and whistles it runs smoothly in the background without slowing up your system.
