View Full Version : marauder hiccup in overdrive

Hey guys im new here, my uncle has a red marauder and he is not very computer savvy so im posting for him.
His car hesitates when in overdrive with a load on it. Ive tried cleaning the maf i know the terminator cobras were famous for that. We also tested resistance on all the coils primary and secondary. All of the coils were relitively even across the board the secondary were all about 6.3 and the primarys were all like .9 to 1.0. The primarys spec is i think 1.4 to 1.9 but they were all even so i figured they all werent bad. But because i ran out of options i bought a coil anyway and have been trying it on every cylinder until i find the bad coil if any?? with no luck as of yet
The car wasnt throwing any service engine light but when i pulled the codes i got a p0113 code something about the IAT idle air temp i gather. It seems to be getting worse but is still hard to diagnose because it only happens when the car is hot and not like a normal skip were you can just put it in gear throw a load on it in the drive way and see if you fixed it. You literally have to drive up a very steep hill in high gear in overdrive for it to happen. The hill is like 4 miles away so this is getting very annoying. the car also has new plugs.:help:
Any advice would be awesome and please dont tell me to buy 8 new coils because i wanna fix this thing not just throw parts at it. the car has always had a stock intake filter on it by the way so no oil crudding up the maf
thanks guys:flamer:

Hoe many miles? maybe a TC look up problem or clogged fuel filter? I really have no idea. Nice Evo though.

I had the same thing happening three years ago at low speeds with the TC locked and not accelerating (constant speed).......accelerate and it would go away!!
This "Phantom Misfire" was cured for me by replacing the spring connectors between the coils and plugs with Granatelli solid connectors!!:bows:
Some say "BS" but I still say "BRAVO" three years later!!
While you're at it new plugs wouldn't hurt!!:shake:

That sounds like a convertor lock-up issue. Does the car have a tune?

all the springs looked really good and i put a genourous amount of dielectric grease on them, and as i stated in my post it has new plugs.
Do the MAFS go bad in these cars often i was reading up on it and the maf and the IAT are one sensor. Ford wins again 10 :lol:points

the car is all stock. factory tuned
That could be the reason, the stock tune sucks!! Maybe a upgraded tune with some line pressure would help.

The trans should kick down to 3rd, when you load up on OD...
Your stock shift points and T/C lock-up schedule SUCKS!!! It's trying to save you gas...But, in return, kills your performance
MAF's don't go bad...
Get a tune for it...That should fix alot more than just that hesitation...
Good Luck...

The only time I had a MAF go bad it was self-inflected. I over-oiled my air filter and it ruined the wire sensor. It had different problems than described above.

That worked for me, too. Had to go back to the springy's after the blower, tho.

I can't disagree with Randy, either regarding getting a tune.
If the problem is new, tho or has come on gradually, the valves are prolly full o crap. This eems to be common on these engines that want to rev and run if they are 'babied'.
To remedy get 2 cans of seafoam. Follow the instructions but use the WHOLE CAN in the vac hose. Drive it HARD to blow it clean. Do it again. You'll smoke up the town, but it will run hella better.

The car has just over 40000 miles on it.
I just have a few questions, is the MM's ecu able to be flashed? My evo is flashed but on my mustang i have an anderson PMS piggyback. My uncle is really old school and i dont think he would like the idea of shipping his ecu out to be flashed, hes 71 yrs old and hates fuel injection to give you an idea.
Are these GMS solid connectors worth buying? The spring connectors really dont seem too reassuring when i cant hear the good snap im use to when putting on a wire.
Ive heard of this seafoam stuff and the old tranny fluid in the gas or down the carb trick but recently some one told me that its really bad for your o2 sensors. I took the car out and gave it a very sprited drive border line beating so the seafoam might not be nessecary. Im not sure what you mean by Vac hose.
Can someone fill me in on this?

I forgot to mention it seems to be doing it in the lower gears now.

Yes the EEC V can be flashed until an EMP strikes. Most go through the OBD II port under the dash. GMS works, plain and simple, they installed mine at their Oxnard shop. Idle smoother and no spark problems. If it's doing it in 1-4 then its sounding more like electrical or fuel delivery to me. But I'm not a tuning guru.

Sounds like a TC slip. Transmission may be either going or suffering from low pressure. Neither would surprise me....

no i dont thinks its the tranny with a slip if you give it more gas it gets worse this is an electrical problem. The only transmission realted issue i would entertain would would the overdive not locking up. how do i get a tune? the cheapest route?

Thats exactly what i just said,
Your TC (torque convertor) may be slipping. It can be misconstrued as a hesitation. I've owned a ford or two to understand this problem. Its fairly common.

T/C solenoid?

oh gotcha i interpreted that as you thought the bands in the transmission are slipping. Im kinda ruling that out as well now though cause its happening before the overdrive would even kick on
need tuning info????????????/

Talk to Dennis Reinhart. He has his own forum "Reinhart Automotive"
I've ran his tunes on my old 03 MM and currently on my new 04 MM.

if you can, try to make the hesitation occur to the point of where you get a flashing CEL or OD light
fox2boost
08-27-2008, 08:53 AM
there is no cel but I did get a p0113 code which is IAT related. My uncle doesn't want to tune it, his reasoning is he doesn't want to HOP it up he just wants the perfectly running car back that it was on the factory tune for 40000 miles. If it was mine I would but I honestly I think a tune alone would solve this problem the car ran flawless before this started happeneing. So please if you might know what the problem is or a way to diagnose the TC please chime in but no more get a TUNE replies

Just tell him to bite it and tune it. You yourself even think this will solve the problem.

I'm pulling the tranny tonight to have my drivetrain guy check it out. And to all the people telling me to get a tune. I fix cars I don't watch two guys garage and throw parts at my car until the problem gets solved or I lose interest. To everyone else who actually gave me some usefull feed back thankyou and I'll let you know how I make out.

I did not read all of the above posts -
Does he mash the gas while in OD?
If so.... the Trans is fried.
