I was at the gas station yesterday filling up on good ole Sunonco 93 when I think I fubar'd my fuel system. After the car had a full belly of go-go juice, I secured the fill nozzel and went to put the cap back on the tank. I turned the cap too far and it began to click about 5 or 6 times.

Did I screw up my fuel system?

I usually hear 1 or 2 clicks, but this time there were more. What should I do.

I think the caps are clutched so they won't break if over-tightenen. If the light comes on to indicate a loose cap - you may need a new one.

at most you would need a new cap, like bad merc said.

i think your alright

I will be dropping the car off at the dealer tomorrow. I feel a certified tech would be the best person to diagnos this issue.

Are you going to part it out or sell it as a whole car? With that kind of major damage you will be taking a big loss on the car.

Good luck and I hope you get what it's worth.

When the certified tech calls your cap crap, be sure to take it as a deeply personal insult to the core of your soul and reiterate your totally delusional attachment to your gas cap so we can be completely buried under your deep devotion to it.

Charlie... oh I'm so sorry to hear this....
Perhaps you just blocked the opposite end of the high performance muffler intake hose?

Unblock mit and it should be fine.

Best of luck.

Charlie, don't worry about it. The other day I was watching Beatleguise and I kept turning mine till it clicked 157 times, and it kept making the same clicking sound evertime I turmed it.......

but then I havn't had to fill up yet either. I hope I don't have to turn it 158 times the other way to get it to open when it gets low on fuel.

Your gas cap makes a click sound to start with? Yeah that's not good lol.

Mine just turns half of a turn is and locked and won't turn anymore.

sounds to me like your HP muffler hose feed is clogged too. must be blocking off the entry of the residual hydrocarbons.
Charlie got his cleared out and now all is well. Perhaps you should find a certified mechanic and see about getting this taken care of. asap.

I agree with Rich on this one... To make sure that this does not happen again, do what I did... The fuel cap MUST be fusion welded on to maintain proper fuel pressurization from the upper part of the tank. After this is done, call me for directions and my "remote fuel-rail filler neck nozzle" mod. It allows you to put gas DIRECTLY into the engine!!! This is wayyyy more efficient than the old stupid way...

Charlie,

I would like to help you but I need some more info.

How many other marauders did you see on the way to and from the gas station? Any blue ones?

What music were you listening to prior to, during and immediatley after the event?

What's your favorite band?

Do you have a 300A or 300B?
I heard that there is a difference but I can't remember what it is. I can't find an A or B on my car anywhere. Maybe it's on the C pillar?

Charlie,
Have you figured out your gas cap problem yet?
If not, I would try using a 'Whatsit' valve from a K5 Blazer...and don't forget to tighten the WTF clamp!
That should fix it, then you can get back to illegal street racing!

This un-necessary torque will over load the stub-shaft causing transmission failure. Unscrew the cap 11 times immediately.

Ok, we got it figured out.

The problem seems to be improper tourqe of the left rear wheel.

It seems the wheel torqe caused unsual stress on the transmission causing unsual stress on the engine, causing unsual demand for fuel causing unsual pressure in the gas tank causing difficulty in gas cap reapplication.

I think it has somthing to do with the proximity of the left rear wheel to the gas cap location. They are very close to one another. Coincidence? I think not.

Then If you take the Left rear wheel and put it on the right rear side, then put the right rear on the left side you will not have that left rear wheel problem. That should fix it once and for all.
Ok, we got it figured out.

We all agree, you can not sell it, now as it is broken and needs to be put on blocks in your garage. You just won't get more than three figures for it in the current, broken, condition.

If you had to half it now, for whatever reason, you would have to just put up $485.00 and admit that is all it is currently worth, with that major fuel system repair that you need.
