I just turned it off, but I have to wonder why it was on in the first place.
This is also a heads up for those of you who just soft off your computer, it is still running when connected to the web and just soft off, you need to turn the power off too.

It's part of the operating system
It allows you to INITIATE a request for remote assistance. The service is always running when the OS is running.
It cannot be used to remote access without your permission unless you are in a corporate network and the administrator has set up Active Directory to do so.
Stop panicking!!!

You do know they can only track you on Windows based machines. Linux or apple does not work for the government snoops.
I traced with some fancy trace software once someone from Millbank hacking into my computer.

Suffice to say I quickly formatted and dropped my current IP adress.

The easier way to change your IP is to just disconnect your modem (broadband, DSL or Cable) wait 30 secs and then plug it back it. When it powers up it will acquire a new IP address. At least with my modems it does.

I did find mine on, then unchecked it. and yes the last time I checked it was off. Just don't keep important stuff on hard drive. but if yu must then install another hrd drive and keep it unpluged until you want to use it.

Format does nothing except erase the file allocation table. The files are still on the drive!

not always. depends on if other MAC's have asked for leases during your 'time off'.

not a quick format, a dos level full format.
I once was ordered to erase several computers with bootkill. Even after showing how easy it was to reverse they still insisted so I had them put it in writting. FYI: Fdisk/mbr will reverse killboot everytime.

can take up to 3 days to swtich, but usually leaving it for one day will release your old IP to someone else. Some places will hold it for longer but not many.

Still recoverable - needs DOD 7-pass

Depends on how long the DHCP lease time is configured for in router/switch.
Put it back on, I cant connect to your PC now!!!
