View Full Version : V10 Project Underway!

Zack

Well, I feel very accomplished for 6 hours work today

I knew to get this engine in the car, a new oil pan would need to be fabricated as well as the oil pump pick up tube. The passenger side motor mount needs work as well, Ill show that at the end of the post.

So, here we have 2 stock Marauder oil pans:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets069.jpg

Remember, the stock V10 pan was too deep and would have hit the crossmember. Here is what I did with the 2 pans:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets071.jpg

I then bolted the 2 pieces to the block and tack welded it all together:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets072.jpg

On to the Oil pump pick up tube....
Believe it or not, the diameter of the V10 tube is smaller than the Marauder tube  The oil pump itself was also smaller in inlet diameter.

After I Frankensteined it all together, it consisted of the v10 tube toward the front, and the stock Marauder tube down in the pan. The Marauder tube actually slid over the V10 tube where it all connected. I made sure to chamfer the tube here so oil would flow as freely as possible. Here is the finished tube:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets077.jpg

Now I need to have this professionally welded and powdercoated

The V10 oil pump tube bolted to a main stud one cylinder forward than the finished tube does, so I had to switch the bolts around (These are TTY bolts, so Ill be buying new ones before I button everything up)

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets075.jpg

Pan and tube ready for final welding:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets078.jpg

Looking further along, I noticed the passenger side motor mount would need some fab work:

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/Pets074.jpg

Not to worry, I will weld some steel bar horizontally and connect to a hole in the block. I will also weld a steel bar vertically and bolt it to an empty hole down towards the oil pan. Should be plenty strong when done.

Looking even further ahead....
The V10 intake will not work in the Marauder unless the wipers are removed. My plan is to take the wipers out and get everything together so I can get it running. Once running, I will probably take the car to Logan Motorsports for a custom sheet aluminum intake with the inlet right over the alternator.

Look for more updates in about a month, after I get everything back and put together. :burnout:

The pan and Oil pump pick up tube are at the welding shop, then the pan is off to be coated.
If all goes as planned, I will (attempt) to set the engine in the car the first week in October.

Im dying to find out what will need to be modified/removed to get this engine in the car. Hopefully not much!

Give it a tune and a whiff of NOS and watch out!!!.....

BTW: Zack, how high, rpm wise, do you think you can safely wind that V10 up to??

BlownMerc
09-20-2008, 08:21 AM
They aren't much for revs with the balance shaft and extra weight, but man they make some torque. I bet with a tune, it will come to life compared to the trucks, seem they are mild when unloaded, feel the same with a load like the PCM cranks up the power when the load tables go up. Just a seat-of-the-pants feel thing, not sure if that is the strategy or not. Your doing something I always wanted to do with my old 97 F-150, never had the money or time. Good luck!

This is hot rodding at it finest. Ingenuity, adaptation, uniqueness, fun,
lots a power and total impracticality.

This is the way it used to be, V8's in a Model A, small blocks in a 50's Ford and big blocks in a tri 5 Chevy.

Very cool:beer:

I think I will get the PCM from an 04 F series truck with a manual transmission, then buy a stand alone transmission controller for my BC Auto 4R70W. That is taking all the guesswork out of everything.

The project is still moving along.
I spent all day saturday attempting to make a new steering shaft assembly, but had little luck.
I went back out Sunday morning with a clear head and realized I was approaching the project all wrong. A quick call to Summit this morning and the correct parts are on the way. Steering will be done by the weekend and the wiring will be underway.
Once that is done, I will need to buy the transmission controller and route the coolant hoses. Thats it!

Ok, the steering shaft project from hell is finally done.

The stock steering shaft has a very interesting geometry, and I found out the hard way the it could not be reused. I had to hack it up and completely remove the factory u joints and add in new units from Flaming River.

I also learned that when more then 2 u joints are used in a steering shaft assembly, a shaft support bearing needs to be used.

This part of the project is undoubtedly the hardest part, mainly because I started it uneducated. When you look at the pics, you will see that I suck at welding, but rest assured the welds I did make are plenty strong.
Total cost of new materials from Summit: $155
$10 for professional welding on the steering shaft.

Next up, wiring harness modifications.

Enjoy the pics:

After the wiring is done (which will be easy) I have to mount the mustang fan shroud, find a new coolant hose to attach from the crossover to the thermostat, then hook up the transmission controller. Thats it!

Zack, is there going to be enough clearence between the exhaust manifold and steering linkage when the motor will shake from give it gas? Using a stock style or solid motor mount?

Yes there will.
I have about .050 clearance right now between the support bearing and exhaust manifold.
Remember, the engine moves toward the passenger side during acceleration.
I still have the option of installing spacers under the motor mounts if need be.

Bob, the 5r55s indeed has 5 gears, but the 5th gear is used as a downshift gear, not a forward drive gear.
Most people dont know this.

I hope Im not wrong, because I heard this from a very reliable source.

A lot of times a trans that is advetised as a 5 speed is not what it seems.
The '5th' speed is sometimes used for decelleration only.
I am completely ignorant to the trans mentioned here, just adding some info.

I think that the 5R55 skips a gear on light accel, and on hard accel it hits all gears keeping the RPM up. No big RPM drops on shifts. At least that's what I remember when I had one in a '98 Explorer I had awhile back.

The 5R55's 5th gear is an actual overdrive:

Transmission Control Switch (TCS)
The transmission control switch (TCS) is a momentary contact switch that allows the driver to cancel operation of fifth (D) gear.
The TCS is located on the end of the selector lever.
When the driver initially presses the TCS a signal is sent to the powertrain control module (PCM).
The PCM uses the shift solenoids to disengage/disable fifth gear operation and activate the coast clutch.
At the same time, the PCM illuminates the transmission control indicator lamp (TCIL) to notify the driver that 5th gear is canceled.
When the TCS is pressed again, fifth (D) gear operation is enabled, the coast clutch is released and the TCIL is turned off.
Whenever the ignition is cycled (vehicle shut off, then started again), the TCS is turned off and fifth gear will be enabled, even if the TCS had been on when the ignition was shut off.

Here are the factory specs for stall speed on a '03 Explorer 5R55

Stall Speed Chart Engine RPM

Sorry Zack for the hijack!!!! My bad. One last question though. Would it be more feasible to just use an Aviator pcm? And then have the trilogy tune "redefined"?

OK thats all for this topic out of me. Carry on with the V10, I'm itchin for a ride!

Tonight I hacked up the wiring harness that came with the V10.
I need the 20 connectors for the COP's and Injectors.

The Ford wiring is very simple, 1 big power wire feeds everything and a negative drives each component.
So actually I will only be making 22 solder joints, as opposed to 40

Freddie helped out, and even he wasnt amused.....

I went back out last night and wired the passenger side COP's/
Tonight I will wire the injectors, but Im gonna route the wiring harness under the intake manifold so it is hidden from view

I am ordering the transmission controller today!

Early vehicles with the 5R55 did skip the 5th gear (2nd gear, actually) on accell, mostly on Rangers since they were light, Explorers used it to aid in accell due to anemic 4.0 OHV and weight. Later recalibrations on both made the 2nd gear an "all the time" situation. That tranny is basically 1st, 1st OD, 2nd, 3rd and 3rd OD. The 4R44 that was in the Ranger is the same tranny, they just added a calibration change to utilize the OD band on 1st gear to make the 5th gear. Later versions of the tranny changed internals for greater torque capacity as the powertrains got better and so on. The current dipstick-less versions (5R55S, W, N) are same basic architecture with drastice differences, but same principle.

Sorry for continuing the highjack.

Awesome project, looking great! Sticking with the ETB?

If that stands for Electronic throttle body, the answer is no.

Yes it does, and that's what I thought. Did not realize when you started this thread/project that you were using a three valve motor. Nice. Those heads have massive potential. Guess you could really go crazy with this in the future. Aren't the crankshafts in these v10's split journal? You would definitely have to watch the revs if that's the case.

I dont know about the split journal, but I do know it has a balance shaft in the drivers side head.
I am fully aware that the engine will need some good parts to rev safely.
Its only money, Ill make more next week!

All depends on if he's done working on Becky's bathroom.;)

He should be back on the board in a couple weeks; or maybe knine or one of the other Chitown guys knows the status.
