Would axles out of a newer CV PI 8.8 swap into our cars without issues?

I have a friend who wants to sell me a complete rear end out of a 08 CVPI with less than 4000 miles on it for $35.

If the axles will work I'll buy it and swap them in with some new bearings vs the $400 Ford wants.

You will need the differential too since the shafts have been 31 spline since 2005.

Not sure, but it may have 31 spline axles. That's a great deal, I'd get it and find out, then if they are 31 spline axles upgrade the differential unit to 31 spline also. Check the ratio and see if it is a posi, you may be better off to simply swap the whole rear end.

So would I be able to just swap the axles and spyders into my axle housing?

I read somewhere that the 31 spline spider gears cannot be transferred to a 28 spline differential because of the pinion shaft diameter. Is the differential in the newer housing a "peg leg"? I saw that the posi differential for the 31 CVPI is cheap.

I thought CV PIs were posi with 3.55 gears. Not sure though.

If that's the case... I purchase this rear end and it has a 3.55 posi 31 spilne.... could I just swap everything?

I would say yes. BTW, VicsEvilBrother was looking for a housing.

The P71s are available with both 3.27 and 3.55 gearing. Hopefully the housing still has the axle tag on it so you can determine what gears you'll have. Just a clarification. :coolman:

What about axles from a 1995 CV?

Nope, too short

Welp... I picked up the rear end. Might end up swapping the whole thing in there.

There was no tag on the housing for gears... so we spun the pinion until the axles revolved one full turn... it took 3 and 1/2 turns.... so it has 3:55 gears.

I'll be checking stuff out to see if it will just swap in without any issues... if not... I'll take it to a shop where they will swap the guts and re-shim and all.
