Jim Lytle was a Kiwi living in SoCal in the 60's who built several dragsters using Allison aircraft engines. I think he was one of the first over 200 mph in his allison powered 32 Ford. He also built a White truck powered with an allison. Used to be those engines were a dime a dozen, not anymore. Allisons are rare and expensive, RR Merlins are even more rare and expensive. I really admire guys like the unsung Jim Lytle.

No problem - just remove the rear seats, move the fronts back and ya got plenty of room...

The marraige of the Merlin and the P-51 resulted in one of the best fighters of the war (IMHO). The P-51A did start with an Allison, but the Allison just didn't make enough power at altitude. The Allison was used in the P-40, and a few other planes. The Merlin was used in many - P-51, Spitfire, Mosquito (twin engine), and even a 4 engine bomber (Lancaster). Merlins are the best sounding engine I've ever heard. I once saw/heard a Spitfire, a Mosquito and a Lancaster in a low formation fly-by many years ago. The sound was unforgettable.

First time I heard a Merlin-powered P-51 start up, power up and then take off, I had chills run down my back. Nothing else sounds like it, and yeah, it's sweet.
