View Full Version : Does the Marauder need special Coolant?

May sound like a stupid question, but here goes. Does the Marauder use any type of special or specific coolant/anti-freeze? My Chevy's use that orange million mile lasting super expensive coolant. I wonder because I read the stuff in the Marauder was Gold something or other, and wondered since I will need new coolant in mine. Anyone know?
Dave,
Here is a thread with an in-depth discussion on the coolent found in our Marauders. Best I could do to help you.

check your owners manual, it should tell you what to use. should also tell you the part number from ford for the stuff

It depends...if your car came with green coolant, no...it's regular antifreeze.
If the coolant in the overflow is a clear yellowish, then yes...you need Motorcraft Premium Gold, or Zerex G-5...there may also be other compatible formulas by now...DO NOT mix any other kind of coolant with the yellow (gold) stuff...and you need to use distilled water or the change interval gets reduced...
What did I tell ya ^^^

Some early Maruders have green. Most should have GOLD.....

True. My First 300A had green, this one has Gold...

So it really doesnt matter which you have? Does either one do a better job?
Mine's green...haven't heard any reason to want to switch...

They both should cool equally well, the primary difference is that the change interval is longer with the Gold...I don't know if you can flush the green out and replace it with Gold...I don't see why not, as long as the flush is VERY thorough...

We were talking last night about the coolant that came in a new Mustang, gold is suppose to be good for 100,000 miles.

Some Marauders have orange coolant if this is Dex Cool its no good, I would drain the system and replace it with green prestone now this is my experince, Dex Cool is just plain bad

My supercharger uses Dex Cool, with a mixture of distilled water and redline water wetter.
My radiator is filled with the regular Preston green antifreeze.

Dex Cool is highly corosive and will trash a entire cooling system

I guess we'll change it before winter sets in, for now we used it to monitor leaks... and where they're coming from. We've been lucky, absolutely no leaks from the car.

Then what Dennis is saying is that it mite be best to change over to the Green Prestone antifreeze to preserve the coolant system?

My recommendation is the stardard green Prestone (50/50 mix) and 2 bottles of water wetter from redline.
I've found the water wetter to be very good stuff in aluminum.

No Marauders have come from the factory with Dex Cool (red) coolant. The earliest cars may have had traditional green. Later cars all have yellow Motorcraft Gold/Zerex G-05/BASF Glysantin. Fear not, Ford has tested this stuff for years. They have not tested every possible combination, so they say do not mix types.

well that answers that so we are all safe, again I did not say it did. I just said if it is, get rid of it and to me Dexcool is Orange.

^^^what Pantherman said^^^
There should be no need to change out any coolant in a Marauder before its scheduled interval...
and Dennis's earlier reply about Dex-Cool was right on...it wasn't one of the General's brighter ideas..."right church, wrong pew"...

OOPS, My mistake. After doin a little research and checkin the overflow bottle it seams my car had anti leak pellets added to the cooling system turning my yellow coolant a golden tan color. Will still change it out but no rush now.

To ALL: I know I go over board on preventive maintenance.
I would flush the system at least every two years.
I personal will do my Marauder every year.
My fleet of work vans (all Fords now 20+) get flushed every 45,000 miles.
in 5 years we have never had a radiator problem.
And that my friends is a very good thing.................

Possibly the oldest thread ever resurrected here.
Use either Motorcraft Premium Gold, or Zerex G-05.

There is now Peak Global Lifetime Coolant/Antifreeze.
I don't know about 1 change and done forever but it would be nice to go for longer then 5 years.
Anyone with any knowledge about this?

Per the website....
Lifetime Protection - "Provides guaranteed LIFETIMETM protection - for as long as you own your vehicle - when a complete cooling system flush and fill is performed and specified maintenance followed"
So you still need to flush and fill.... just like you should be doing now.
BTW.... Antifreeze will still provide freeze protection but overtime you'll lose the corrosion / lubricant additive package.

I believe from reading the details that a complete flush and fill is required to change over to this.
Then as long as all adds are with the same fluid no additional fluid changes are required for lifetime/ownership.
Yes the corrosion inhibition and lubricity will wear out. Improvements are made with formulations over time, as with regular motor oil. I just wonder if this will really safely last longer then the typical 5 yrs of other long line products that have been on the market for some time now. Particularly in a vehicle that only racks up low miles.
I did check with their tech department and 'it has new formulation different then their and other five yr products.' They said 'similar but better then the new chrysler 10 yr coolant package.' I asked bout the confusing warranty language. He said yes it is confusing but what they are trying to say is after a complete flush and no contamination with other fluids the change interval is lifetime.
We all know nothing is lifetime. But if I could get ten years that would be great.
Perhaps I will try it and monitor with ph strips.
Not a common fluid though, none of my local places carry it. Though oddly Walgreens sells the 50/50 solution.

IMHO.... even if you had to change it ever 5 years I'd do it.

Yes that is the question. Is it still needed given progress?
Someone pointed out to me that, that other Jay, (Leno) used Evans brand lifetime coolant on one of the tv episodes. After research I am going to go with the much more expensive Evans because it has other advantages as well. Particularly it does not expand with the heat of normal engine operation.
Amazon 4 gal $177 of the coolant 4 gal of the prep $120.
Talked to the tech dept. The prep is the coolant without the additives. It can be reused by boiling out any water it scavenges (USE NO FLAMES). provided you don't mix different old antifreeze types with it. I will make sure all old fluid is completly flushed out with water before I do the swap. This way i can reuse a large % of the swap fluid on other vehicles.
Also you can check the water content of the swap fluid before you pour in the more expensive permanent coolant. Which can also be boiled to remove water if necessary and reused.
CAUTION ALL ANTIFREEZE IS FLAMMABLE. USE NO FLAMES TO HEAT IT.

OUCH!
I'll stick to normal anti freeze at $15.00 a gallon with a drain and flush every 3 to 5 years.

Antifreeze is cheap. Flushing is easy. I guess I just don't see the reasoning in laying trust in a company's warranty?

Shop ran out of time when I caught this and now it's sitting in the shop parking lot; hope this doesn't damage anything. Will be fixed on Monday.
Thoughts?
