I feel silly for having bought a 4 banger to drive to work now that gas is so cheap! But it was a really cheap 4 banger and it's getting almost 30 mpg stop and go on 87, which is probably 200% of the mileage the MM would have gotten.

I make sure to waste gas w/ the MM when I'm not at work though. If gas goes under 2.00 a gallon here I am going to buy something that gets 10 mpg highway. The last car that I had that had that bad gas mileage was my 72 429 T bird.

We should go back and review our threads from this summer when a lot of us were saying we would never see $3/gal gas again! Now it's close to $2. Really, don't believe ANYONE who thinks they know where the price of gas is going or not. Every time there is a large change in any direction you get a ton of worthless projections. Let's just enjoy it while we have it. I have NO predictions. This is now WAY better than in 1981 when gas was about $1.11 and my income was about 14% what it is today.

I really don't understand all this Supply & Demand crap. A month ago, gas prices were up over $4.00 and oil was near $200 per barrel. By all accounts, fuel consumption has been cut by only about 5% with people driving less and deferring trips. That doesn't seem to be a tremendously big savings on the overall market. However, prices at the pump have been cut in half ($1.97-$1.99 for 87 Regular is pretty common around here) and the price for a barrel of oil is well below $100.00.

Why does such a "small" decrease in consumption cause such a wide swing in prices? Just asking. Or is this more the result of caution in the "oil speculation" market as a result of the Wall Street meltdown?

I'm not complaining about $2.00 gas ... just want to understand what's happening here -- outside of consumer manipulation.

It has been officially announced that gasoline in Buffalo, Ny is priced higher than any other place in the contiguous United States.

Why you ask.... Friggin Erie County Taxes. I still have not figured out the great benefit we get for paying higher taxes here in western New York.

We have had nice weather this Fall.

93 Octane is $3.07 at the cheapest place in town.

Yep, I waited till I well east of Buffalo last Monday to fill up on the Thruway.

I gotta move, 87 is still 2.59 a gallon here. Since the DTR is sleeping I haven't looked at 93 lately but its usually 30+ cents per gallon higher. Friggin NYS taxes... :mad2:

Charlie,

I'm certainly no expert but aside from any particular manipulation and speculation I think what we see is a manifestation of the fact that we are running very close to full capacity in refining the necessary gasoline and this summer we were bumping up against the ceiling where there is no more capacity and supply and demand becomes magnified. If we drop demand even a small amount we get some relief from the ceiling effect with the thought (in the minds of the speculators) that we may cut back more which tends to drive the price down. The peak barrel price was about $147 and it is below $60 now or less than half. Luckily, the retail price of gas has dropped around half as well (but not quite). I'm surprised to see almost one-for-one in these two prices. Also, there continues to be downward pressure because the economy sucks so bad that the markets are not expecting a big upturn in demand. That's my pea brained approach.

Jon,

I think you've put some pretty good logic into your explaination. OPEC has certainly got the message, and is trying to cut back on production to drive crude prices back up. Depending on how successful the cartel is in holding to that decision, we'll probably see an upswing in price again within the next couple months, although IMO, I don't think back up to the levels we were at last summer.

There is the complication of TWO supply-demand issues at work here. First there is the supply of crude oil that is mainly controlled by OPEC but then there is the supply of refined products that is strangled by our lack of refining capacity. They both can work together in one direction or the other or they can work somewhat at odds. We can control the refining capacity better than we can (at this date anyway) the supply of crude. So, we need to increase that capacity to get a little away from this ceiling effect.

Still $3.07 for 93 here in Buffaloser.

See, we here in Erie County get taxed on the selling price, not per gallon like the rest of the country. As such, the bast-ards want to keep the price high to keep collecting all the extra tax $$$$$... Mother-fookers. And our roads suck, bridges are falling apart, property taxes are highest in the country, sales tax it 8.75% on everything, including SERVICE !!!!! (Non-prepared food is exempt and Clothing is 4.75% [finally]) We in Buffalo, Erie County are taxed more than any other county in the state. WTF?

And about The Niagara Falls crack. . . We pay more per KWH for electricity than NYC. We her in Western New York get to pay for the maintenance of the infrastructure so the rest of the North East can get cheap electricity from Niagara Falls.

Who the heck said Socialism is coming? It's been here a long friggin' time.

I gotta' move out of Buffalo and NYS.!

Just Buffalo Joe, some parts of upstate aren't that bad. Heck gas is down to $2.31 for 87 here, while in Syracuse, 30 miles away, its $1.99 go figure.

Oh, and BTW, a guest on a radio show I listen to overnight called the stock market melt down and fuel price fall, six months ago. He was right on target. He now says fuel will be $5 a gallon by March... Hoping he is wrong.

I was surprised to see a 10 cent drop overnight at my local station yesterday. I don't think I have ever seen that big a drop in one day before. Of course, we've seen many cases of 10 cents and more UP overnight. We're still a little high here in my neighborhood at $1.899 for 87. I haven't checked today though.
