View Full Version : Screw the oldies stations!

I went to drive my moms car today and all it has is an AM/FM with cassette and I left all my Beach Boys cassettes at home. I turn on the "True Oldies" station and they are playing a song from 1987!!! WTF!!!!! It was Roy Orbison and I think the song was called "Anything you want, you got it" or simply You Got It, but how could something from 1987 be an oldies song? They might as well be playing Ozzy, Ramones, Yes or anything else recorded at or before 1987. If they were to play Roy Orbison play Pretty Woman, Crying, I'm Hurting or heck let's really turn back the clocks to 1956 with Oobie Doobie. I know Roy was around for the "oldies" era, but this was not an oldies song being played. Same happened with The Beach Boys Kokomo (however you spell it) and that song was also from 1987, but I didn't hear it tonight.
When you really hear what an "oldie" should be it's on a special weekend or when someone dies. We'll probably never hear Bo Diddley again, hey maybe Duane Eddy will die and we can hear Rebel Rouser (the only song of his I ever heard on the radio) ... I don't want him to die. This is so stupid and I'm glad I have Sirius Gold playing all the time. I have lost all respect for FM oldies stations.
Does anyone see my frustration or do I sound nuts to you? :mad2:

I'm sure they'll miss you, Dom.
Funny about GGGgggggguuuuuuggguuuugenerati ons, though, because point of view depends upon where you're standing. I remember being outraged when Elvis was being played on a station calling itself oldies. Some of us remember oldies as that genre following WW ll, and the big band era. For example, Patti Paige, Bing Crosby, and that group of singers, generally, up until the Kingston Trio came along, were what they were calling oldies when I was Dom's age. Lucky for us, there's folks around, like Dom, to set us straight.

I do too, his voice sounds just as good in 1987 as it did in 1964.
I thought messing with the age of the music was something new, according to Mike it has always been done. :(
Oh well, back to Sirius Gold. Maybe I can catch The Five Satins today or Gene Vincent as suppose to boston or grand funk railroad.

I argee with you. In Milwaukee our oldies station 95.7 changed their format and play about 20% oldies. The oldies they play don't even go back to the 50s, barely the 60s. Now they even play Madonna songs.

The radio stations around here change formats quite frequently and it is very hoard to find an Oldies Station at all. I just keep changing the station until I find something I like. Personally, I think Oldies should be at least 25 years old but some stations think 10 or 20 is old enough. ;) Other stations cycle through the decades periodically with an all 50s, 60s, 70s, or 80s format.

i am with yu, I took my moms car out just last week for a spin. She has a 1967 GTO, but has an decade setting on the FM. 40-50-60-70 just press the time period, then yu pick the type of music on the buttons below.. sometimes when say on 60s they sneak in some 70s. i was completely out raged!!!

You know, of course, most of the 60's happened in the 70's. :D

Well as times change, the term "oldies" change too. The radios need to play what the money spending demographic listens too. I remember listening to oldies 104.3 ALL the time in my dads car...the 50s and 60s music was the norm. As I grew the music got up to 70s...late 70s...now even some eighties songs! It is ridiculous, but imagine in 10-15 years when 90s will be oldies. HA!
The only solution is satellite radio, solid gold station 5 is awesome!!!

Yup that's about the only channel I listen to often because they killed the Punk channel.
Uncle Lar I was listening to the station around 1AM, so no DJ I think, just that computer B.S.
