hello all, it has been a while since i have posted...sorry for the absence.

Anyways, I have searched and came up with alot of info but nothing here matches what I am experiencing.

I had the chirp when the a/c kicked in. Cool. I replaced the tension pulley, idler pulley (smooth one) and the belt. Chirp went away, but...

Just before the drive home from work (before I replaced above components) it seemed that the symptoms had gotten worse. A rattle or chatter comes in fairly predictable intervals. Initially it seemed that the tensioner was bouncing when the sound started (when I looked at it in the parking lot at work). It also got hot and the a/c seemed to suddenly not blow as cold. I turned the a/c off and drove it home with no overheating issues in stop and go traffic.

I got home and replaced all the above thinking the tensioner/belt had finally gotten to the point of no return. After that 20 minute job and a restart of the engine...no chirp but the chatter problem is still there.

I can see when the a/c kicks in the tensioner arm moves an inch or so (indicating heavier load on the belt I am guessing) and moves back when it kicks out again. Within a few seconds of the a/c kicking out is when the chatter kicks in. Initially I was thinking the sound was from the alternator but after more listening it seems more from the a/c area but I give up saying for 100percent sure.

Ideas in my mind at this point are:
a/c clutch is slipping
a/c clutch relay is triggering several engage/disengage events rapidly (but the tensioner doesnt move like when it kicks on)

any other ideas?
Is this a symptom that the "pull the a/c clutch and re-shim" procedure would fix?

what would it take to replace the a/c clutch? can it be ordered seperately?

thanks!
Be good!

I would agree that your A/C clutch needs some attention...

I agree if it happens at the same intervals while defrost or A/C is engaging.

This seems to be the case, at least in my mind.
I ordered the complete clutch assembly AND relay for 120-ish SHIPPED.
The local parts boys want 175 and up for PARTS of the clutch assembly.

"oh, so 175 for the clutch assembly?"
"yes"
"The ENTIRE assembly?"
"well, you should probably also buy the coil pack"
"hmm...thanks for your time, I appreciate your efforts to help"
"so, you gonna buy it man?"
"............."

Gotta love guam!

be good folks!

Mine chirps when the AC clutch kicks on and the tensioner bounced. I changed belt and tensioner, tensioner bounce gone - chirp remains. Then I learned that there is a TSB on AC clutch chirping issues. I have not taken mine in for repairs yet. Apparently the clutch can sometimes be adjusted, but sometimes needs replaced. Good luck.

I had that chirp, it only happend really as I came off a WOT run.

I have seen the posts about adjusting the clutch shims. It interests me a good bit since I am assured that it will take about one century for anything to get shipped out here to me. (simple letters rarely get here in under 15 days, forget about packages).

I found a few references to "rockauto" dot com here on the forum and made my purchases. I then went back and ordered a new set of head lights. That sand in Yuma was killer on the lenses. I will wet sand the old ones so I have a back up set.

In all I have verified a lesson learned earlier on Guam...I should anticipate parts breakage and wear out at least 6 weeks in advance.

Next is a set of pads and maybe rotors.
Any suggestions?

be good!

Borrow a clutch removal tool from AutoZone and remove a shim/shims from the clutch to reduce the gap.....I think the spec for the gap is around .005"....if too large from wear you will hear a loud clunk/chirp when engaging and it may actually slip!!

Won't cost anything and it has worked for me on two CV's AND my Marauder!!

Well, I have applied all the tips/tricks of the rocket scientist/brain surgeon tendencies in me...
and after all the head scratching I have now figured out...
the noise comes and goes DIRECTLY in concert with the fan turning...

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, so I have proven my idiocy to myself once again.
The first time I looked at it, I was so focused on the tensioner/belt replacement I had just done that I didnt even look at the FAN!!!!

I'll pull the thing out saturday and have a look. I hope it isnt a broken/cracked fan blade. Fingers crossed that it is just a loose fan or an obstruction in the shroud.

If it is cracked/etc. looks like it will cost about 200bucks from autopartsgiant.

oh well, i guess I will have a spare clutch assembly on the shelf. (I might just install the new one when it comes anyways).

I have new questions that I will post regarding failure points for common parts in another thread.

thanks all for the empathy and input! ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE FINE COMMUNITY WE HAVE HERE!!!!

be good!
