I have a 1988 CV PI with a 5.8 351 windsor, its having problems starting when its cold. I turned it over and over, it nearly drained the battery, so decided to get some jumper cables and hook it up to the MM. I did it so the LTD could turn over quicker, well after 15 min I decided to quit. When got back in the MM it was overheating badly..the needle was in the red so i immediately turned it off and popped the hood. There was a little bit of smoke coming from the passenger side under the hood, there was coolant leakin from the hoses and resivoir. It seemed like coolant had leaked all over the front of the engine.... i let it cool down for about an hour and started it back. A minute had past and it started runnin back in the red again. someone help, its killin me to see my baby actin like this.... thanx for listening

I would have to say thermostat... I replace it in my moms explorer and it stopped doing that... I had the same problem with her truck... 5 minutes of driving and the thing was in the red... Replaced the thermostat and gave it an oil change and she worked mint

After overheating like that, you might want to check the oil for signs of water contamination, and also the water to make sure there's no oil in there.
Did you ever get the '88 fired up? I had an '86 351W that used to do that, though it was more of a hard start problem with mine. Damp weather used to screw with the ignition wires. I also had intermittent problems with the ignition control box. After a while, they seem to go bad, resulting in ignition cut out at random times, for random lengths of time.
I was heading up a steep hill on a highway once, doing about 100 km/h under 3/4 throttle, when the ignition decided to cut out. It then cut back in about 2 seconds later. That gave the exhaust just enough time to fill up with a nice amount of air and raw gas. There was a loud pop, followed by a huge exhaust leak - both of my Dynomax mufflers were blown wide open by the explosion. I replaced the ignition box after that, and it never happened again.

That sounds like a waterpump or thermostat dude......car was just idling......coolant temp sender could be gone bad but that would throw a code...

Yup, I agree.
BTW, how old is the coolant, and when's the last time you had the cooling system flushed?
