What your going to see is more brands merging under one building. For example Ford is pushing stand alone Lincoln Mercury dealers to combine with Ford dealers under one roof.

The weaker dealers and owners with low capital will not survive in 2009.

Dealers love used cars. They either buy them at auction or give people low ball numbers on trade-ins, and can sell them as much as they can nail people for. Dealers make much more profit on a used car as opposed as a new car so alot of dealers perfer to sell used instead of new which is one of the reasons why I think manufacturers are in trouble. It seems everyone knows how much a new vehicle costs the dealer and expects to buy it at a couple bucks over dealer invoice, leaving the dealer forced to try to build up their lost profit with "aftersales" financing/alarms/wheels/dvd players/tinting/"aftermarket warranties" and anything else they could add to a vehicle.
