I am still seeking a cure for the ticking or light knocking noise I am experiencing. I suspect piston slap, but I was wondering if worn rod bearings could be the culprit?

its too cold to go out and look, so I thought I'd ask if it can be done in the car, or if the engine has to come out?

it only taps/knocks after it warms up at idle, it subsides off-idle and is silent when cold.

0-30 oil didnt make it better or worse, but I'm going back to 5-30 next change.:help:

+1 on the heads, even if it was the rod bearings it would be a very temporary fix swapping them out.

You have to pull the engine up out of the mounts if not out of the car to get the oil pan off.

thats what I suspected. I think I will drive it till it goes, then replace it with an aluminator

Have you considered 5/20w oil?

A ticking or light knocking noise should be further isolated to either the block or head. It may be loose cam hold down bracket (s) or a bad cam follower. This topic was discussed some years ago with dealers doing a lot of head swapping (drivers side).

Ask that you isolate the area of the motor the sound is comming from with a tool made for that purpose. May save you an engine pull and rebuild.

And if it's just the "tick" it may go 200k miles or more.

If you spun a rod(s), it happened for a reason. Bearings don't just spin usually, they are pretty damn durable. A bearing spinning is usually a result and not a cause.
