View Full Version : Is Yellowstone going to go "POP" ?

Some interesting stuff floating in the news channels if you look around.
The supervolcano underneath Yellowstone national park has a history of a full scale eruption every 600,000 years. Supervalcano's are capible of total and near total extinction events. Yellowstones' last full scale eruption that formed the Yellowstone Caldera was 640,000 years ago. Recently (Since the end of December 08 until today earthquake swarms have demonsrated an increase in seismic activity ----scroll down on this link http://www.seis.utah.edu/req2webdir/recenteqs/Maps/Yellowstone_full.html )
Over the recent past few years some geysers in the park have changed schedules, some have become dormant, some have re-activated after years of being dormant indicating underground changes. Recently, a ridge in the bottom of Yellowstone Lake has been discovered (100 ft tall, 200 feet wide, 2000 feet long) and the caldera has rapidly been rising (like a baloon inflating) at several inches per year for the last few years, and one article (linked) quotes the chamber filling with magma at a rapid rate.
Question for discussion: What do you think is going on? Do you think this could ever lead to an "extinction event" sometime in the near 100,000 years or less? Some interesting links below, google a few searches for yourself and see what you find. Yea, I know it's a lot of links, but give them a quick check and let me know what you think.

We're all gonna' die!
But I'm still not selling my Marauder.
With the Silver Birch paint I should blend right in with the ash. Of course in 100,00 years it may fall into the high milage category.

As orders of magnitude go, I'm not too worried about something that could happen in the next thousand years or so. Maybe tomorrow is our unlucky day, but I've never won anything in a lottery, either.
Of course, that wasn't your question, was it?
I suspect it is building toward an erruption - big or small, who knows - and it should be interesting to see if it does go off in the "blink of an eye" that constitutes the small part of my existance in this world.

I'd be more worried about Islamic terrorists nuking the World.....
But the worst part of this is that I've never been to Yellowstone.... need to get there before it's gone!

The real trick, Rich, would be to choose the very day of the eruption. Would that be cool, or what?
Just think of the stories you could tell to your grandchildren ....oh wait, they'd, be telling stories about you.
The scientific data have been compounding as more is being learned about the impending catastrophe, all kidding aside, which could occur in our lifetimes.

I've seen those cartoons where he's tunnelling somewhere and pops up in the wrong place. I think he's going to Vegas, and took a wrong turn at Cucamunga.

This is completely weird that you posted this. I have been trying to keep up with the activity in Yellowstone ever since I heard of the "Mega Volcano". I always watch Good Morning America in the mornings. Well, this morning, I didn't watch it because my little girl was running a high fever and we had to get her to the doctor. As I was standing there brushing my teeth, a thought crossed my mind that "they're probably saying on GMA this morning that there is new evidence that the mega volcano that lies beneath Yellowstone could erupt in the coming days". Weird coincidence. I'm in western NC, so I might have a chance of surviving this, but it would be bad for everyone everywhere.

*Whew*. Outside the zone, just barely.
Yes, it's going to *pop*. But geologic events are on a time scale far longer than I am. 'Soon' might be 100 years.
Remember, panty hose over the air filter helps prevent it from plugging up from the ash. Not too tightly, or the ash goes right through it!

It's probably a regular cycle with the earth. The Ocean levels rise causing pressure differences on the plates. Then the thing blows, skys darken, the earth cools off rebuilding the arctic and it starts over again.

You mean that 'The Sky is Falling!' melodrama? Yea. :(
The BBC version was much better. Less drama, more information.

Apparently you youngsters sleep all night, and miss Art Bell/George Noory on Coast to Coast AM. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/art/about.html
They have the greatest collection of nut cases predicting the most awful calamities you could imagine. Time travelers, Wikens, remote viewers, abductees, Bigfoot chasers/catchers, crop circle experts, UFO chasers, and predictors of the future. Sometimes they have people who actually know what they're talking about ......It's where me and AJ get all of our information. :D

Just to be safe, we should start drilling for oil there and relieve some of the pressure.

Relieving the pressure may just be the wrong thing to do. It's the pressure that keeps the magma from expanding and the whole thing in check....kinda like opening a propane tank all at once. If a quake or other event should allow a "chimney" or other escape for the compressed gasses, the result would be a chain-reaction expansive explosion.......a really big noise and lotsa mess. :(

If that big of a volcanoe blows there wouldn't be a world left to sell your Marauder in. The ash would circle the globe and blot out the sun for decades, all the plants would die, with all the animals and the people. Only if we moved to Mars would we have a chance and Mars might be a nicer place to live.
So you're saying that I shouldn't get my windows tinted?
