View Full Version : Wacky wipers with a twist

I don't drive my MM much so its very occasional wacky wiper syndrome never got high up enough on my list of car things I need to fix. It would do the wacky wipers once every few months and after letting the car sit and presumably dry out, it would not do it again for a long while.
Yesterday the wacky wiper syndrom came with a new twist. The washer would be stuck on in 2 or 3 of the delay/intermittent settings. Not the slowest intermittent setting and not the low/high non intermittent settings, but everything in between. I've never had this happen before w/ wacky wipers. I was assuming that I just needed to clean the trap out under the wipers since it always ends up going away but now that the washer motor is getting involved I'm thinking it's not just the wiper motor being submerged. Does the wiper motor have any electronics for the washer motor in it, or is my combo switch at fault too?

Mine did the same thing in June 2005. >>>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18971&highlight=passat

Hmmmm. So in your case the wiper motor cured the premature washer fluid discharge issue as well. I really have to clean the trap out and see whats going on. Either that or a mouse ate something under my hood.

Clean the trap out and then take the wiper control module off and clean that as well and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't then more than likely you need a new wiper control module and/or motor.
I bought a new aftermarket motor from Autozone for $80 and after reading someone else's thread I decided to switch the wiper control modules (new module on the oem Ford motor) and fixed the problem. I also drilled bigger drain holes in the cowl and put some extra holes in to help water run off. I plan on every 6-8 months to clean the trap out just to make sure I don't have the problem again since it's pretty easy to do.

I had all of the symptoms you mentioned, got to the point that the washers would just go on by themselves (often in the rain), and even had one instance where the washer motor continued to run, even after turning off the key!
Motor finally crapped out right before the holidays necessitating a change out, but since replacing, no more issues with "wacky washers."

When you depress the washer stalk, it will turn the wipers on, so the answer is yes the wiper circuit is tied into the motor circuit and if you have a soggy pc board in your motor housing anything is possible.
