The HHRs have it.
And Baker, your a GOOD lead in for the rest of the story...
My next door neighbor happens to be Gene Mori of the Mori Brothers Racing Team of the 60s and 70s. They raced two different 50 vintage VW Beetles with Chevy power and then later MOPAR power. I bought his brothers (Butch) house next door.
Go figure I have a three car garage with it's own furnace for the winter months, and a commercial grade air compressor with connections all over the place in the garage...
Gene is currently building this HHR with 454 power and should be done sometime this Spring. He has already built an HRR with a Chevy 350 in it, talk about giving Rice Burners a spanking, he can still do it (at age 76). To handle the power/torque, he customized a S-10 truck frame and put the body on top of that. He built the drive shaft tunnel for the drive shaft to go back to an posi-trac axle that is hooked-up to a 4-point mounted suspension (designed by him) to handle the power/torque at the rear.
Butch is now building a house along the banks of the Potomac
They were inducted into the East Coast Drag Times Hall-of-Fame in 2002.
Enclosed is:
Another shot showing the HHR in his garage
A picture of Butch racing Richard Petty
And a historical Post from a thread in The Volksrodders Forum.
Gene is a great person and it's fun watching him do his "magic" to this car, being retired this is his full time hobby.

Huh...that's kinda neat. From the pics, I could make out the rounded fenders, which suggested the semi-"boat-tail" look of der Beetlebaumer. I've heard of some truly unnatural things being done to Beetles...somewhere out there on the net are the plans for a 350 conversion, tho I don't think I'll be trying it myself anytime soon.
I've got another big project waiting in the wings...
I tell ya, it makes me feel the lack of a high-school autoshop when I was but a highschooler...:depress:
