What is a legal window tint?

I really want to tint my windows dark because it looks great. I might even go as low as 3%, but I was told it's illegal to tint the drivers side window in certian areas of the country. Other times I was told 35% or 20% is the limit for the drivers side window. Some will tint the rear windows 3% and the front row will be 20%.

Does anyone have a picture of a black Marauder with a 3% and 35%/20% tint? I think it would look goofy, but you never know. Anyone know the law?

If it's not OEM from the factory it's technically not legal in many states.
No tint on windshield or front seat windows.

Your best bet to to check with your State Motor Vehicle web site for State Inspection. You can also stop and ask not sure if your State (Il.) have Private or State run. Pa. & New Jersey have both:) IN any case here (NJ) it is not legal to tint front windshields and driver and pass. side doors.

Wow NO tint is allowed on the side windows. Better make it 20%. :)

In illinois it is illegal to have any tint on the driver & passenger front windows. It is legal to have any kind of tint on the rear windows & the very top of the the windshield. I have all my windows tinted on both my crown vic & marauder & haven't had any problems.

dom you cant have any tint on the front windows other than the factory tint. you saw my tint at the meet. that was 35 front and 25 rear so that gives you an idea of how it would look. if you want to see the pics just click on my cardomain link in the sig.

o and yea i already got a ticket for the tints in chicago. its the first ticket i got for tinted windows in about 5 years i owned a vehicle with tinted front windows so i guess you can say its not bad and police really dont bother unless you are a jackass or if they are just really bored (my case of an angry meter maid) lol. the ticket was only like $30 anyway.

Depends. My state is a joke. But I've found a few ways of "skidding" by inspections. I'm just light enough most cops won't pull me over.

I have 15% all around. I been only pulled over once and didnt get the ticket. I have a lot of NY inspection connections here so I dont have to worry about removing tint, although I dont think NY makes you pull the tint off anyways.

I have had tinted windows in MO for over twenty years and was made to pull off the tint on the side of the highway by the highway patrol one time. It was not that dark but the car was black. He told me then that if the factory glass is already tinted you can only apply a tint that get you to the allowed tint in the state.

Ok, so here's mine it's 32% on sides, and 22% on the back,

The interior being dark makes it look alot darker as well.

I got pulled over yesterday by a City of Clayton, MO sgt. He had a device that he placed over the side glass in the front to read the tint. He said I had 25% and 35% was the legal limit. Told me to get it taken off, and went on his way.

I'm at 3% all around on my mustang in nyc. I've been ticketed twice in 5 years. But only pulled over once, the other ticket was because I was stupid and was going through the toll at the midtown tunnel and got busted. But I know it is illegal, just dont' get harassed over it.

Here in Texas you can have 35 percent on front sides and as dark as you want on the rear sides and rear window.....on the windshield you can have tint on the top as long as it doesnt go below the AS1 line on the windshield. If your car was manufactured before 1985 you can have it as dark as you want on all widows but the windshield and if you do not have a pass side mirror you cannot tint the rear window, which back in the day....alot of cars didnt come with a pass side mirror.

In Maryland if you are registered as a classic (20 years old or older) you can't get fix it tickets. I am going to tint my camaro and my old pickup 5% when I get around to it.
