Clear Lake, Iowa Feb. 3rd, 1959 - The Day The Music Died. Sirius has been doing a nice retrospective all day. Cousin Brucie will be in Clear Lake broadcasting his show. Maybe at the Surf Ballroom? Hearing about it, again today, I couldn't help but be struck at how young the guys were when they died so suddenly that night.

Next week I gotta go to Phoenix instead of Lubbock. I'm certain I'll miss a great Buddy Holly memorial program. Of course, I don't remember it as I was only 1 yr old.

Yep, 1959... Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper died in a plane crash. They were 3 of the biggest names in the pop music business at the time. The event inspired Don McLean's "American Pie". It was "The day the music died".

And too think they took the plane because the heat broke in the bus.

I read an article last week, and it stated the coroners findings, at the end of his report he charged his fee, and took it from their pocket money.

..........yeah.and with a flip of a coin, Waylon Jennings ended up in the bus instead of the plane........and I was 11 then.....remember it well and the news on the radio the next day---it was the only news that day ..for several days.........

My band will be playing a show on thursday and I want to see if we can get down Come On Let's Go by Ritchie Valens because everyone will be playing Buddy Holly songs. Buddy had some great stuff, but Ritchies stuff I kinda like more. Big Bopper never really caught my attention, but I really don't know that much about him.
Dion was actually supposed to be on the plane and Ritchie Valens won the coin toss. The reason for the plane was because the heat in the tour bus was broken and I think Buddy was a bit ill.
Dion and Buddy were arguing right before the plane departed too. Buddy said I hope you bus freezes and Dion said to Buddy I hope your plane crashes.
Upon the crash site, Buddys handgun was also found away from his body... it's not known if he drew it on anyone, but no one was shot. The supposet reason for the crash was simply pilot error. The guy couldn't see during the snow storm or didn't know what he was doing... really.
Anyone have anything to ad?
EDIT: Are you sure it wasn't Dion MarauderMan?

I am listening to 60's on 6 right now at work! I am 26 years old, but I love the music!! I have sirius in my car and when I found out I could listen online at my desk, I was psyched!!! It is great! I switch back and forth from the rap stations and the 60's station... I venture into the 70's and 80's as well, but I love the 60's on 6!!

TJ, the event took place in 1959, but I know what you mean. Some of those 60s channels will play 50s music around this time of year and the 50s channel usually goes to 1963 or sometimes early 1964.

Not sure where you got "Dion"..but sure it was Waylon.....he later in life has said in interviews that he always felt bad joking with him about saying "hope your plane crashes"..........caused it did....

At least Chuck Berry is still alive. He's The King Of Rock N' Roll anyway. Not, Buddy, not Elvis, it's Chuck! Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!
Hail! Hail! Rock n' Roll!
Or as I would say these days "Deliver me to the days of old/Long live Rock n' Roll"

Whenever you can catch anything on the life of Waylon Jennings, watch for his early time period just starting out whit with Buddy's Band---these points are discussed....
