I need to fix the "wacky wipers" but just getting the arm off is more difficult than a guitar solo on a real guitar.

What is the correct/easy do to this?

Thanks!

There is a tab on the side of the arm that you put a screwdriver in and pry it out a bit, then use a wider screwdriver and gently pry up on the arm from the bottom. It should pop off with some pressure. I removed mine several time's so its become simple for me to do.

Paul is there a pin or something I must keep my eye on while doing this?

You will see a little tab, just pry that out a bit and it will release the lock that holds the arm down. Once you pull the tab out and lift the arm up a bit, the tab will stay out.

Thanks Paul, I have the idea now. Are you coming to KY? I need to reward you with a CD full of car songs or something.

I'll bring the record player, bring a few vinyls. We'll listen to them as we clean our cars.

Be sure to lift the arm (off the windshield) before/while pulling out the little tab. The tab should move with little pressure - if the arm isn't up high enough, you won't get the tab all the way up. It's probably easiest with the hood open.
Once the tab is all the way out, let the arm back down. It will will now rest on the pulled-out tab, and will not go all the way back onto the windshield.
With the arm held securely off the windshield, you can now remove it from the splined output shaft of the wiper motor linkage. It should pull off with little effort.

Whatever you do, DO NOT PRY AGAINST THE WINDSHIELD GLASS!!!

Even though the output shaft is splined, there is a keyway with a small rectangular key to ensure the wiper arm gets aligned correctly when being installed. The key is not attached to anything, and is really only held in by corrosion (and maybe a slight taper).
I just re&re'd my wiper arms a couple weeks ago, to install some of these (http://surewipe.com/en/gif_files/sw4_pkflat500x594.gif), and I ended up losing one of the keys. No biggie though, since the arm is splined it still works fine - I just had to be careful about aligning it properly. Some thick grease ought to hold it in place okay, while reinstalling the arm, so that the key doesn't fall out.

What are those for?

+1 on the dab of grease, or whatever to hold the key. I used a drop of glue to hold mine in place, hopefully they won't fall out next time I pull the wiper arms.

I knew I'd seen this question before. Here's another thread, with pictures.

They're supposed to make the wipers wipe better by increasing the force with which they press against the windshield.

I bought new wiper blades about a month ago, and it seemed to me they just weren't working too well. They're fine from 0 to about 25 mph, but above that they leave a lot of streaks. I used a brand I've used before with excellent results, and I was surprised at the lacklustre wiping action.
I used to have these wiper arm springs on one of my other cars, and they worked really great, made the wipers work much better at high vehicle speeds.
But this time, even with the extra springs, the wipers still aren't that great. I guess it's the wiper blades themselves, maybe I got a bad one. I'll have to replace them again, even though these are like new.
