I have been looking at the new BOSS 429 heads that are coming available. can be retrofitted to regular 429/460 blocks. been wanting 1000 hp in the f-600 for a while now...

This is the Boss 302 block, which is an upgrade for the 5.0 engine and not for our cars. If you're using it to upgrade a 5.0 block, yes its a good upgrade if you plan to go over 550hp. Mexican blocks are good to 600hp, the R302 blocks are good to 700hp, Dart and Boss over 1000hp. Unless you are going to put some serious boost or spray the crank out you will not reap the benefits of this block.

I've got a 1989 LX Sport 5.0 Mustang. I want to get a good block and start piecing a new engine together instead of rebuilding the tired 193k mile block, even though the car still runs like a champ. I'd rather not buy a crate motor because I can get most of the parts at cost price.

Gottcha :D Wish I had a toy that parts were cheap and plentiful for.

I had heard that even though the block is strong and a decent price, it needs enough machining to be as expensive as a decent R block or maybe even a Dart.

If you've got an engine shop that will be good for you, go for it.

What type of machining would be needed?

The Boss blocks need to be checked for every clearance after shipping. They are machined from the factory, but the deck might need to be milled and it wouldn't hurt to check all the cylinders for hone and roundness.

Your stock block is still fine unless its broken. With a simple hone or bore and a good cleaning it will last another 200k miles. The blocks are iron and can handle alot of abuse before needing replacement. All the machine work on my 91 Coupe 5.0 block was $340 and that included ARP rod bolts.

If you need any help, I've rebuilt 10-12 5.0 engines.
