This may be old news but it was new to me. What to do with the old oil from your car(s)? The local auto parts stores will take it and dispose of it for you, free of charge.

I tested this out and went two two Advance Auto Parts and one Auto Zone stores and they indicated they would take the old oil.

However, the quick oil change firms would not.

Please don't throw the used oil down the drain or on the ground as it really contaminates the environment.

I always take mine to the local parts store. They eventually get used to me walking to the back of the store (beyond the cash registers) without talking to anyone first. Of course I usually have a heavy drain pan in my hands so it's not really like there is a question of what I am up to.

Most FLAPS and quick change places will take used oil, just don't bring 10 gallons at a time

Always good to check first. I transfer my used oil back into a couple of 5 quart Mobile 1 container for easy transport.

In the State of New Jersey it is the law that if you sell motor oil you must recycle it. Quick change Companys sell it as part of a "service" so they skirt the law here. Wal-Mart, K-Mart and other will take it.

I have 3 of those large plastic cat litter containers that I fill up over time while changing oil on our 4 cars. When I'm full I go to the county dump - no problem. I just have to be careful transferring the used oil from the drain pan to the jugs - if you don't pay close attention, it's all over the place!

When I was a kid, no such thing existed and I remember me and my Dad (mid-1960s) digging holes in the backyard and burying the oil and the filter! each time! Ah, the good old days.

If in or near Southbury CT, give it to my Brother for his heater....

I load up my trunk every few months and dump the oil (in containers) outside the back door of Pep Boys...under the cover of darkness.

I refuse to fill out the stupid forms.

For me at advance auto parts you just put your name, address, and phone number and you can dump away in their container...

If you spread it on your gravel road it keeps the dust down and kills the weeds...........

Ah the cycle of life, returning it from whence it came :D

Wow, that's borderline socialism. For Me, just walk in, wave at the guy behind the counter, hold up the oil catch, walk through to the back to the garage, and dump the oil in an almost full barrel.

Who says there's no more personal service in the city! ;)

Watch out for those pesky security cameras

They once did that all over the country with old transformer oil...unfortunately it was full of PCBs.

I save my used oil in big detergent jugs and take it to the county recycling center, along with my used oil filters.
