Canton Ave has a 37% grade.

You say "mistakenly" took the MM up. Did you have a problem?
Just to put that hill in a little perspective .... the MMs front wheels would be 42" higher (3.5 feet) than the rears.
The picture in the link that you provided -- looking down that hill gives a much better perspective on how steep that road really is. Article says it is a "No Way" street.

I believe that only applies in the winter.

You are correct sir,
It is a 'Do Not Enter' for coming down. And SHOULD be shut down in th ewinter but it turns into a hillclimb contest for locals. :D

This might explain things. Look at the pic. You'll see that things have changed over the years, especially at the end of the street.
look at this one, too for comparisons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canton_Ave

It looks pretty steep in this picture, I would definitely not want to drive down that road in the winter.
Have there been many accidents on this road?

That might be what the 'Do Not Enter' signs are about.
Not to many accidents, because your not aloud to go up it.
They have a bicycle race every year up it though.

It's all good here.
Actually, I am curious what went through the house and when it occurred. There might be a story somewhere or an incident report.
Heh, I remember this one time when I was small that the family was checking out open houses in upstate new york. We turned a corner to find the steepest hill we ever saw. We tried going it slow but our old Plymouth Voyager wouldn't make it. We tried a running start but got maybe a quarter of the way and then ran out of energy and then rolled back down. We ended up having to all get out the car, take all that we could out of it, and then have my mother who was lightest (and the most scared) drive it up while the men dragged our stuff up once the van made it to the top. It had to have been over 40 the street was near vertical from the bottom.

Love the "younz". I learned how to drive a stick in Pittsburgh back in the day and they didn't have any hillholders back then. You just prayed a lot!!

I know of one steeper, In Excelsior Springs, MO. I will get yall pics next time I am near there...When it snows, cars pile up like wolf pups.
A local millionaire has a driveway thats the steepest I have ever seen, but its heated so no worries for him.
