Here's mine, been a fan of the Wood Brothers since the late 60's. Have been a fan of Bill Elliott since the mid-80's so right now its my favorite driver on my favorite team. Nice looking car this year too.

when he left RYR and went to toyota, i followed jeff burton a little bit, but now bobby labonte is driving for yates (a satellite team), and i like that YR brought the #28 back...so here are my colors now:

I was a big Jarrett fan as well. When he left Yates, I started pulling for the 99 car. Edwards had a good year last year, and I'm hoping for a repeat.

Any of the Roush cars, was a Mark Martin fan for 18 years, until he went Brand X and is now driving for a felon :mad2: My main driver now is Biffle, love the way that guy wheels a car. Couldn't believe how many accidents it took to take him out Saturday night:eek:

Fireball Roberts,Tiny Lund,back when they raced real cars,not these generic things.There ain't no stock in "stock car" racing no more.Mark Martin when he was driving a T Bird was okay,at least it looked close to a stock real car.

Curtis Turner, Joe Weatherly, and David Pearson back in the day. Don't really have a favorite since Alan Kulwicki Died. I guess the Wood brothers or Yates racing. Follow the NHRA more than Nascar now. FORCE:burnout:

Yeah, I was a Kulwicki fan, too. Watched him get his start running Late Models on the short tracks up in Wisconsin. We just knew he was going to be something special, even way back then. Gone way before his time....:(

i, too, was a kulwicki fan. i stopped watching in '93 after DA and AK both passed.
before that, i also liked harry gant...one of my first memories of watching NASCAR with dad was the september when gant went 4-in a row, including winning @ martinsville with a totaled car!

My interest in NASCAR has waned over the past couple of years. Got involved in watching NASCAR in about '96-'97 as a means of "bonding" with my younger son -- he was about 13 years old at the time. As a gamble, I took him to see a short track race at Richmond and we both got hooked. We immediately gravitated to the #88 Dale Jarrett in the Red, White and Blue FORD Thunderbird and stayed with him as he transitioned to the Taurus.

The #88 was real easy to pick out on the track because of its distinctive color combo and "dayglo orange" #88 on the roof ... and at that time Jarrett was usually up in the Top 10. We knew all drivers and car by number and color.

About the time that Jarrett switched to UPS as a sponsor - our NASCAR interested started to fade. We could no longer find the #88 "Brown & White" UPS car on the track because it simply blended in with the rest of the field. Of course, RYR started to put emphasis in the "younger" drivers and Jarrett fell farther back in the pack. It ain't fun anymore when your guy is consistently running between 37th and 43rd position. Just haven't found anyone else to watch.

In the last couple years, there has been quite a bit of turmoil. Lots of new drivers come and go. Few of the older drivers (except for Mark Martin) are running consistently. Heck, I don't even know who is driving what car anymore and the colors and sponsors are jumping around to confuse me even more. Many of the die-hard Ford, Chevy, Dodge or Pontiac drivers are now making circles in a Toyota. Even Jarrett ended up in a car badged with the Toyota emblem only a few short years after running the FORD flagship #88 to the Winston Cup championship.

I still watch races occasionally; but not as avidly as I once did. I miss the commentators like Ned Jarrett and Buddy Baker. Listening to them gave you an appreciation of racing and the adjustments on the car to make it right for track conditions. Now it seems that the focus is on technology and not so much the "Why and How" of racing. And oh yeah, we now have the Car of Tomorrow on the track.

Only difference is I've still managed to keep my interest up, albeit with Roush cars vs. Yates (I guess they are running Yates-built engines, so there's still a tie-in)

Still not like the "old days" though, is it? :cool:

I actually met Alan Kulwicki in of all places, Howe's Caverns, outside Cobleskill, NY. It was the day after the Watkins Glen race in 1990 IIRC. He was incognito with what I assume was his family. I didn't make a big fuss about it. Nice guy.

+1 Ray, he was a GREAT guy!

When he first hit the short tracks in Wisconsin, he was something else. Don't know if they still do it, but "back when," after the race, you could go down into the pits, or drivers would pull their cars and haulers up behind the stands and :bs: with the fans. Kulwicki was one of 'em, and a great guy to all his fans.

RYR started to put emphasis in the "younger" drivers being the diehard RYR fan i am/was, i followed all the news stories and took a bit from conversations with a few folks at DJI:

when ricky rudd left RYR, he was fed up because he felt like DJ was getting the good equipment (there's probably some truth to this). so when he announced he was leaving, sadler's contract was up w/wood brothers. yates said "we need another driver" and looked to sadler. and the wood brothers, being from virginia, jumped at the chance to have another virginian in their driver's seat so they snapped up rudd...and of course, "fatback" mcswain followed rudd over to the #21.

when DJ and ES were teammates, RYR bent over backwards for DJ in terms of getting him crew chiefs he could tolerate (remember, todd parrott had left to work with richard petty). what did they go through, 4 crew chiefs?

through all that, robert yates had said on many occasions that DJ would have a job with RYR as long as he wanted to stay in the #88 car. having met and talked with robert on a few occasions, i can tell you he came across as one of the most genuine people i've ever met, so i have no doubt that he meant what he said about DJ.

so, i don't really believe there was a focus on younger drivers. i think the performance issue was a twofold problem:
1. the RYR organization got behind the ball on building good cars
2. NASCAR rule changes in the late '02 and early '03 seasons threw DJ for a loop, while ES was better able to adapt.

when RYR failed to perform, DJ thought there would be greener pastures with the waltrip toyotas - boy was he wrong...and sadler figured evernham's dodges would be better for him, when it turned out to be about a wash.

so, in yates' position, who can you hire when the good drivers are in good cars? young guys who can't get jobs elsewhere.

in the end, i think jarrett forced yates to focus on younger drivers.

I'm sure he was. We've had a couple drivers come out of NY short tracks and do well. Some were like Kulwicki and others were, well you can't say it here, starts with A and ends with S... Fighting with fans in the parking lot, that'll help your fan base. :rolleyes:

Cry Baby, Sore Loser and a Hothead who was always in trouble with his sponsors over image. When he was driving for Joe Gibbs, he was constantly on the carpet for his antics of throwing gloves and helmets at passing cars after a wreck. Sorry, when it comes to the #20 :down: He can drive fast -- but it was more fun to see him spin out. ;)

I had the distinct privilege of serving as MC at a dinner back in 1999, and introduced Ned Jarrett, who was the speaker for the evening. Very memorable evening; he had some great stories from races and events over the years. If we get together some time, remind me to share a couple of them with you.

To me the late 60's thru the late 70's was the best of times for NASCAR; nothing like seeing David Pearson straightline the esses at Riverside, kicking up dirt and rocks for the rest of the field to enjoy. That said, those times are gone now and as much as I wish the cars today were realistic, they arent. To me it all changed with the rear wheel drive, 2 door Taurus that came out when, 1986? Anyway, the COT is an improvement on those lopsided cars they were running and Im really glad they have made them even safer than before. Sure I miss the Cyclones and Superbirds on the backstretch going 225 mph but I also miss JD McDuffie, Neil Bonnett and the rest of the guys who might have made it with our current safety systems. Ill stilll show my age and root for the Wood Bros though, they might be broke but theyre still competitive and hopefully will do well in the big race this year.

He built some of the best Super Mods of the time, and was the innovator of the "left off center" mods. He was a great guy to be around, and smart. You must see his stuff at tracks all the time, (still in the business of cars, or not?).

I think you are right on Nagle Ford. In the early 80's I lived in Oswego and went to the "Home of the Supermodifieds", Oswego Speedway, on a regular basis. I still remember when ESPN 1st started out they used to broadcast races from there, especially the Classic. The tour has killed the place. I haven't been up there in a couple years. Not what it is used to be.

I see his "mud buses" at the local DIRT tracks, Fulton, Utica-Rome, Brewerton.

I've never been to a race but hope to go to Richmond this year.
Take good ear protection to RIR. 43 cars and 32,250 HP running around inside a 3/4 mile oval lined with aluminum bleachers is LOUD.

Even though it's not stock car racing anymore, I'm still entertained. I like all types of (4 wheel) racing - not too keen on the motorcycle stuff. I have to say I root for Johnson for the most part but I do like the Biff in the Ford and really liked his quick start in the Chase last year. I've never been to a race but hope to go to Richmond this year.

Richmond is a good choice, See the whole track, good side by side racing (unless they add the bear greese to the track). Not near as many cautions as Bristol.

Recommend getting RIR seats in the 11th row or higher if possible. My son and I were in the 3rd row on the backstretch near Turn 3 and pit/garage area blocked the view of cars on the front stretch. It was difficult to tell who was pitting and who was not and tracking the cars from Turn 4 to Turn 1.

first 14 cars at daytona 500 time trails ,were 10 chevys and 4 fords. i was just happy , not a toyota. cant wait to see thursdays dual races ,to set the rest of the of the field for the 500 race on sunday. i dont care if a ford or chevy wins , just not a toyota !!! i like carl edwards, mark martin, tony steward, who would you guys like to win. ?? ralph sr.

This used to be great when the cars where stock and you could go buy your winning drivers car the day after the race. Now you can buy a car that has nothing to do with the winning drivers car, kind of looks like it, sort of.

Damn, Elliott blew out his trans during a early yellow flag but I guess its just important the car is ok and good for the Daytona 500 Sunday.
